Be proactive, use NoScript and Adblock+ so this kind of shit never happens again.

Thanks for the replies.
My research indicates that these programs are activated by the site that is being displayed. This has been my experience as well. Is that not the case?

No, this is not the case. It used to be the case, and still is for most general ones... but not all ones anymore. It doesn't really matter what the thing is called ('malware', 'virus', whatever...). You may be able to uninstall it. You may be able to uninstall it and delete the registry entry. The good news... it sounds like it's just a pop-up and not really doing anything "bad" (like deleting/corrupting files or eating up your hard-drive space). It's also possible that the thing on your computer is "kinda new" and malware tools may be able to remove it at some point in the future after they get a chance to identify it and update their removal tools. They're sneaky. And annoying. You may be able to use this as an excuse to get a new PC, even

Well I could certainly use a new computer. I am on a 10 yr old laptop with half the letters worn off the keyboard. I cleaned out the cooling fan the other month and got about an ounce of nicotine soaked dust out of there. I was a little surprised that it hadn't burst into flames yet. I keep a beer close by at all times in case I have to extinguish any unwanted combustion.
Generally I prefer old familiar things over shiny new things. It seems to me that they both have problems. In the past I had always resisted updating anything because mostly all that happened was they moved the fucking buttons around after I got used to the old ones. I do keep my browser and security updated. Anyway thanks for the advice, I will root it out.

I think Malwarebytes was mentioned upthread, and I like it, too. Here's a thread at the Malwarebytes website that provides a record of a user removing YieldManager:

Then you better stay the fuck away from Windows 8. I use Windows 7 and am really happy with it. They really nailed it with the Search function. You know, the one in the Start Menu. If you want to change something, like your mouse pointer speed, you just start typing 'mouse pointer speed' in the Search box and it comes right up with the settings for exactly that.

Chances are, you could find a more advanced machine (can do everything you're current laptop does, but faster and lighter) for about $100 to $200 from Walmart. Even "good, new laptops" for $400-$700 will be hit-or-miss for lasting 4-5 years. Anything over $1000 doesn't mean it's built to last either... it likely just means it has fancier video-card equipment or solid state drive technology or something else that has a decent chance of not lasting more than 3 or 4 years anyway. "They don't make 'em like they used to"
If you like what you have, I would advise sticking with it as long as possible (although it sounds like that time is coming, unfortunately). All computers eventually malfunction. It's just what happens. Percy's suggestion seems like it may be promising in removing the issue. I don't understand why he created the "fixlist.txt" file a few posts after that. However, if your log files don't include certain things in that list... then I would guess that you shouldn't include them (may cause an error when the script is ran). The one 2437DF07D3CB4D858397ED8AE9ED26D5.TMP file may be different per machine, though... that would be tricky if it's something you're supposed to have in that fixlixt.txt file... but hopefully it just shows up in your logs too. Then there's nothing to worry about. Hopefully your understanding of the log files and the procedure he's trying to do is better than mine? Good luck.

Windows 8 has refined the search even more.

Right hand side of screen move mouse up and down and pops right up. Can't get much easier.

The problem is that people are used to a big bright Start button on the bottom left. When newbs first start using Win8, there's no indication that you're now supposed to be using the edges and corners to get stuff to show. Its not at all intuitive.

Yes there is. The first time you start up with a new computer or an update, it shows very clearly on screen how to do it. Also, as with anything new there is a level of personal responsibility to learn how things work. Intuitive is such a copout. What people claim as intuitive in an OS is actually what they are used to. A windows user does not feel IOS is intuitive and vice versa. If MS had stayed with the old "intuitive" OS they would have died very quickly. Now they at least have a chance to be relevant going forward. One month of use and Win8 seems "normal". Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts "God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.

Saying intuitive is a cop out, is itself a cop out. OS's have intuitive features and they have non-intuitive features. A big button with the word "Start" on it, is intuitive. Using invisible sections of the edge of the screen is not.
I'm a Windows guy and I never used iOS until my work got me an iPhone. I thought it was intuitive.
I was responding to a guy who wrote: quote: I pretty sure after 5 minutes of Win8 he's going to be disheartened, especially given that not only did they move the buttons, but they made them invisible and in a completely non-intuitive location.

That is remarkable. If I recall correctly I paid about $2800 for this one back in 2004. It has a 40 GB drive.
Yet another case of unwarranted optimism
