Re: Some of them are pretty smart now
In the past I had always resisted updating anything because mostly all that happened was they moved the fucking buttons around after I got used to the old ones.
Then you better stay the fuck away from Windows 8.
I use Windows 7 and am really happy with it. They really nailed it with the Search function. You know, the one in the Start Menu.
If you want to change something, like your mouse pointer speed, you just start typing 'mouse pointer speed' in the Search box and it comes right up with the settings for exactly that.

Windows 8 has refined the search even more.
IF you can find it!

Re: Some of them are pretty smart now
The problem is that people are used to a big bright Start button on the bottom left. When newbs first start using Win8, there's no indication that you're now supposed to be using the edges and corners to get stuff to show. Its not at all intuitive.

Re: Some of them are pretty smart now
Intuitive is such a copout.
Saying intuitive is a cop out, is itself a cop out.
OS's have intuitive features and they have non-intuitive features.
A big button with the word "Start" on it, is intuitive. Using invisible sections of the edge of the screen is not.
A windows user does not feel IOS is intuitive and vice versa.
I'm a Windows guy and I never used iOS until my work got me an iPhone. I thought it was intuitive.
One month of use and Win8 seems "normal".
I was responding to a guy who wrote:

I pretty sure after 5 minutes of Win8 he's going to be disheartened, especially given that not only did they move the buttons, but they made them invisible and in a completely non-intuitive location.

Well no not yet, my machine is running smoothly.
I meant, like, trying out a demo at a store.
But again, what do these new OS s do that the old ones don't?
I was really impressed with the new search function of Windows 7. Its not just for files anymore, you can search for functions that the OS performs.
So, say you want to change your screen resolution. You can type into the search box "change screen resolution" and it will pop up with the video settings options.
It seems like it is mostly furniture arranging to me.
There's other stuff that changes behind the scenes too, though. Networking can get easier and more secure. The way the OS implements hardware. Stuff like that that you don't see from your computer chair.
Actually, I just put in a new motherboard in my computer, which runs Windows 7. Normally, that's a whole new build with reinstalling the OS. We decided to just through everything back together to see what happens. Windows fired right up. And it was installed on a Raid 0 on two harddrives. That's actually pretty sweet.

A long way from the days of dealing with irq's dma and dealing with dip switches. Tracking down irq conflicts was always fun.
I'm not that old...
But was also fun being able to access all the hardware directly.
This new motherboard has a 3D bios, which is kinda cool:
I have a different board than that one.
