He was fantastic; an actor for the ages.
RIP Peter (Don Quixote ) O'Toole

Appropriate for this thread for certain values of "great."

Harold Camping dead at 92
I wonder if he saw it coming.

Re: Appropriate for this thread for certain values of "great."
This isn't the topic, but hearing about Camping's passing I was curious how followers had reacted to the failures of his prophecies and found this article:
I found this paragraph particularly enlightening - it explains a lot of discussions here:
I was struck by how some believers edited the past in order to avoid acknowledging that they had been mistaken. The engineer in his mid-twenties, the one who told me this was a prophecy rather than a prediction, maintained that he had never claimed to be certain about May 21. When I read him the transcript of our previous interview, he seemed genuinely surprised that those words had come out of his mouth. It was as if we were discussing a dream he couldn’t quite remember.

This is not in an of itself that surprising. Moving the goalposts or playing the denial game is part in parcel with these types of situations.
Camping himself gave a very tepid apology in regards to this fiasco. If we all recall, when the May date came and went, he changed the terminology to reflect that the May date was the 'spiritual rapture' and the new October date would become the 'actual rapture'. Of course, when that date also went by, he got kind of quiet.
From a Biblical perspective however, what fascinates me the most is that the Bible explicitly states that no one other than god can know the day of the rapture. That is mentioned in the book of Matthew;
quote:
Matthew 24:36
"But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only"
So how is it that these so called religious people do not understand what their own Bible states and not call out people like Camping on their BS?

Creepy...
But it reminds me of my sainted mother, who, when asked if she remembered the time she threw a star-shaped nut dish at me and it slammed into the drywall like a Ninja death star, replied, "Oh, I did not!"

Most Christians are embarrassed by Camping and consider him the leader of a cult.
