New Feature: Message Rating System

Hmmm, not a bad idea. I could add a preference to the member profile page: "Select which ID to use for cheers/jeers: ".Unfortunately real life has been busy lately and it's likely to continue.

it would seem that if a member was cheered they would gain status whereas if they were ignored they would gain it slower...jeers are for the weak.(whom initiate them)

And member rating is gone (not that I thought it showed much value)Maybe there could be a (gold?) icon for 5+ cheers and then this could be linked to POTM (so it is more of a consensus vote) in the future system -- automatically posts thread and message?Enjoy

Adminnemooseus made the changes.Many didn't like the rating system when I first released it, but it's a complex feature and complex features are very vulnerable to breakage if they aren't tested when software changes are made, and complex features are very difficult to test. Leaving the message rating system turned on makes it easier for me to discover problems after I make software changes.But I haven't made any software changes over the past year. Development took a hiatus because of interference from the real world (nothing dire - work got busy, which happens every so often, though never before for an entire year). So while I'm not making changes I don't mind if most of the message rating feature is turned off.I resumed development last week but have no release schedule as I'm still unsure of my available time. When I release the next version I will turn on all the features of the message rating system so I can make sure it is working properly.About the suggestions, improvements to the message rating system are on the todo list, including driving the POTMs from it and limiting the votes in some way (think Tanypteryx) but there's no schedule at present.

I apologize for screwing it up for everyone else. I guess it became a lazy way to participate.

I gave you a plus for honesty. Its like our teachers and parents used to say to us...if you don't have anything good to say about anyone keep quiet. We all tend to get lazy and not take the time to explain why we dislike certain arguments or lines of thought.

I don't have a problem with the way you have participated. No apology needed IMO. (I disagree with the part of Admin's comment that you quoted).

I like the way you show each and every post you enjoy reading. If you stopped, I'd probably think you left the community.It does show that you're engaged in reading all over the webpage. I don't think Percy meant it in a negative way.
From a programmers perspective, this is just a fact that needs to be dealt with.If votes do get taken into account... how to you differentiate between spamming and actual interest?
Should you differentiate between them?If you're going to create a metric, these are just the things you need to think about.
I would even guess that Percy is thankful for the way you use the Cheers button so much. If nothing else, as a programmer... it gives him data to test his metric with.

Damselflies or Zygoptera are a suborder of Odonata. They are usually more slender than dragonflies and hold their wings closed when perching. Their heads are dumbbell shaped with the eyes making up the knobs at the ends of the dumbbell.FYI dragonflies are in suborder Anisoptera.

No apology necessary, it wasn't your fault, Adminnemooseus just thought the message ratings needed to be reined back.What we as a community have discovered is that there are many ways to think about the message ratings. A vote (cheer or jeer) could be about content, style, quality, position, entertainment value, etc., and there's no way to know. Board administration should be clear about what a vote means, but we haven't done that here because the goal (or at least my goal) is just to test the software. I think you should continue voting just as you have.But what your style makes clear is that I have to implement an option for board administration to limit votes if they so chose, and that's all I was trying to say. I wasn't trying to say that you're voting too much. We haven't put any rules in place about how one is supposed to use one's votes.

Is this the place to express my disagreement with Adminnemooseus? I thought the cheers and jeers were working very well. Now we are going to miss those red markers from Faith and others.

I never did get round to working out how the marks-out-of-ten-o-meter worked. It seemed to drop a decimal or three every time Faith threw a tantrum but stayed put if you got a dozen green blobs for posting a good joke. Then all of a sudden you'd bump back up again in a single bound for no apparent reason.Not sure how you'd go about doing it, but if you do bring it all back, you need a method of preventing the 'Faith's gone postal' situation. Just as well she's only shooting jeers.
