Cognitive dissonance and conflict with personal world view make the contrary information difficult to pay attention to let alone understand.

And experience here reveals that we behave the same way when we believe something very strongly, e.g., discussions on guns and economics.

Indeed, among other things.

This is the most difficult barrier to these debates for this reason, and I don't really hold others responsible for hitting it.

This can also be why conversion\disillusionment\epiphany can be traumatic for styrong believers.
