Modulous blesses my hopeful bottle in the ocean with:
Good luck with that.
indeed.
But, to get back to the point. I think something has to be done. I am *blank* now. Anyone with any ranking at all is now a 10.0. Something needs to be done, as Catholic Scientist said in Message 178:
This current thing is worthless. Do something.

Re: A better measure...
How about this.
Each post is worth 1
1 cheer makes it worth 1.5
2 cheers makes it worth 2
3 cheers makes it worth 4.
4 cheers 8
5 cheers 16
1 jeer makes it worth 0.8
2 cheers makes it 0.4
3 cheers makes it .2
4 cheers make it worth 0.1
Cheers and jeers cancel each other out.
A score of 8 or more required for POTM nomination. Whichever nomination gets the most net cheers is POTM.
This gives you an ever increasing number, if that's your thing.
You could divide it by Total Posts if you prefer.
This system could work with just Cheers too.
To add an interesting wrinkle, you could limit the number of ratings that can be cast per day based on your total score (so more experienced, or well regarded posters get more power).

Modulous has an input!
1 cheer makes it worth 1.5
2 cheers makes it worth 2
3 cheers makes it worth 4.
4 cheers 8
5 cheers 16
1 jeer makes it worth 0.8
2 cheers makes it 0.4
3 cheers makes it .2
4 cheers make it worth 0.1
okay. are these multipliers? e.g. i make a post. 1 pt. someone cheers, 1.5 pts. Someone jeers o.8 or 1.2 points. another cheer, 2 pts or 1.2 points or 2.2 points? WTF?

No the cheers/jeers cancel out. Basically, work out the net cheer/jeer amount and then apply the value.
So when someone jeers in your example, it goes back to 1pt.

As I see it (today - I didn't bother to go back to remind myself how I saw it yesterday) Percy needs to make the rating system generic - all things to all men, not just tailored to this forum. It would be nice if it was as sophisticated as some of the suggestions but in the end the vast majority of (other) people are just going to use it as a popularity contest.
No matter how complicated it becomes, I don't think you can measure quality. Keep it simple: like or dislike, maybe a running total of likes and dislikes for all posts.

Message Ratings Now Working
I gave the rating calculation system a nudge to recalculate member ratings.

Re: Message Ratings Now Working
So how are member ratings calculated now? What does the rating actually mean?

Re: Message Ratings Now Working
The way the rating is calculated hasn't changed. For messages in the last n days (where n=30 at present):
rating = (total votes) / (total messages with one or more votes)
This raw rating is then normalized with all other member ratings on a scale of 1 to 10. Members with less than 5 messages with votes receive no rating.

Re: Message Ratings Now Working
I'm thinking that using a TIME-BASED cut-off may be wrong. Just use the last 40 posts. Some participants may disappear for good reasons known to themselves. Save the historical last 40. This way, if an old poster resurfaces, we can see where they are coming from.
??
Kindly,

My rating seems a lot more volatile under the current system. It seems like every time I cheer for a Son Goku message, and for some reason I cannot resist doing so, my own rating drops 3 points.

It used to be the case that a newcomer to the site would know the creationists from the sane just by the score, now you have to do it by reading what they actually say - which seems fair.
But I'm buggered if I know how Faith's score has moved from 1+ to 5.6 whilst everyone else is sinking from 8ish to 6ish.
It's like everything is reverting to the mean.

Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved."

I'm gonna whine and complain just like everyone else. I been done needlessly dirty and I protest. My member rating is less than a perfect 10, which is where it should be ... and stay there! At one time I had a perfect rating (well deserved, of course) and my rating remained at 10, as well it should. But now my rating is not just not 10 but is wondering into the nether regions below 9 and changes hither and yon like I'm not consistently the best there could possibly be!
Oh good god! Now it's a friggin 6?!
This is outrageous and needs to change!
Write your massive modules of convoluted code around your tortuous theorems to rate everyone else as you so wish, but I insist, nay, I demand that my rating be pegged at 10 ... for all time to come!

I remember the good old days when I could work my rating back up toward 10 by saying something clever.

Does a higher rating make you feel more profound? (Or just funny? )
