'Duck Dynasty'?? It's a riveting historical documentary about the time when ancient Mesopotamia was ruled by waterfowl. Our modern sensibilities are offended by their tyrannical habits of waddling about and quacking, and yet it is a fact that under the webbed feet of the Ducks, ancient Babylon attained a level of scientific and artistic culture not to be equaled until the days of the Persian Empire.

Sincerely Held Religious Belief By Baptist Minister Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush It really shows the position for what it is. People actually feel discriminated against if they aren't allowed to punish people for not following their religious beliefs.

People actually feel discriminated against if they aren't allowed to punish people for not following their religious beliefs. Faith actually takes it one step further. You are an intolerant heathen if you are against a law that would have eliminated discrimination against Faith which does not allow her to punish people for not following her religious beliefs. Oh, now we are getting the threats here. "Wait till he returns". Is that similar to 'wait till your father gets home" (from a single mother??)
Sorry, but this logical fallacy of 'appeal to the consequences' just doesn't do anything for me. This is particularly true since the bully boy picture of Jesus you are painting does not match the character of Jesus as painted in the Gospels. Well, maybe the overturning tables and chasing people around with whips.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw years ago:
JESUS IS COMING AND BOY IS HE PISSED!What if Eleanor Roosevelt had wings? -- Monty Python One important characteristic of a theory is that is has survived repeated attempts to falsify it. Contrary to your understanding, all available evidence confirms it. --Subbie If evolution is shown to be false, it will be at the hands of things that are true, not made up. --percy

Or in an attempt to Godwin the thread, "Wait till Papa Hitler gets home" is not a very good reason to keep discriminating against the Jews. It makes even less sense if the threat is repeated for 2,000 years without Papa Hitler ever showing up.

Taq writes: People actually feel discriminated against if they aren't allowed to punish people for not following their religious beliefs. Similarly, your free speech rights are not abridged when they shout you down at a town meeting (see Obamacare Death Panels) or contain your protest a mile away from the presidential venue (see Bush)... ...but their free speech rights are shattered when a conservative says something boneheaded about rape, and everybody thinks he's a dick and won't vote for him or watch his show. Conservatives consider their rights powers to be exercised without fear of consequence; yours are negotiable. It's a dangerous notion."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

We all need to be very careful to not conflate disagreement with discrimination. If you think people of color are inferior, you are free to do so. However, you are not free to ban people of color from your taxi, restaurant, or hotel. The former is holding a belief, while the latter is discrimination. No one is trying to pass a law that says christians must accept homosexuals as being moral people. No one. I completely support the right of christians to view homosexuality as immoral and sinful. However, having that belief does not give you the right to take away the rights of others in the public sphere. That is what this is really about.

It's never had to be written as a "right" to hold a "view" or a "belief," so your supporting that "right" isn't supporting anything. The right to refuse service for any reason, however, IS a right, one that you apparently don't support.
From this thread I gather that there are no real rights anyone wants to grant to Christians or conservatives. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

From this thread I gather that there are no real rights anyone wants to grant to Christians or conservatives. While this may sound like an excellent idea the legal philosophy of this nation will not allow such official government sanction of discrimination against christians and conservatives. They must be afforded the same protections against social discrimination as blacks and gays. This is the cross we have to bear living in a free society. Edited by AZPaul3, : expanded.

So you have to allow us to refuse service on the grounds of conscience? Somehow I don't think you are saying that.
Remember, I have not argued for refusing service on account of race, or refusing general service to anyone for that matter, only for refusing specific sorts of service that offend the conscience, such as services that support gay marriage. Are you supporting this right or not? Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

In this case, of course. That's what we happen to be discussing. If you have a case for your own conscience along similar lines, refusing service on account of it, make your case.

As has been pointed out various times by various people in these posts ...
You christians are decrying what you see as discrimination against you for not allowing you to discriminate against others. It does not matter if your bigotry is heartfelt or in keeping with your conscience. Bigotry is bigotry. If you want to hate in your heart that is between you and your bigoted version of a god. If you want to actively practice your bigotry by denying common rights to others then that is a matter between you and the rest of a free secular society. Society is saying you have no right to actively practice your bigotry in the people's marketplace. You lose.
