I spell them "loonie" and "toonie". If we come out with a five-dollar coin, I advocate calling it the "foonie".
I also support the sentiment expressed by one of our foremost comedians, "Save the mad cow but get her picture off our money." I have nothing against Queen Elizabeth but if we have to have a foreigner on our money it should be somebody like Nelson Mandela.
I hereby go on record predicting that when Queen Elizabeth dies we will never have another British monarch on our money.
Some Canadians I would recommend to replace her:
- Dr. Norman Bethune, our most famous Communist (we could call his coin the "bethoonie")
- Terry Fox (the "foxie")
- Dr. Lucille Teasdale-Corti (the "lucie")
I'm sure Americans have some likely candidates too, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. comes to mind (the "martie").
