John Pinette
One of the nicest guys in the biz. Sad to see him go. He took care of everyone around him beyond what was normal. I did a show with him once and he found out I wasn't getting paid and paid me himself. He did that for a lot of comics.

Unknown Species
So I'm crying out, "Oh no, not the blue-footed booby!" over the news, and then I think about this thread.
It's numbers are down by half, no one sure why, although a lack of sardines has been noted in the Galapagos waters as the BFBs stop breeding: the cause of the sardine shortage "remains a mystery." Another fantastic species being pushed to the brink...
quote:
Just to illustrate the degree of biodiversity loss we're facing, let’s take you through one scientific analysis...
The rapid loss of species we are seeing today is estimated by experts to be between 1,000 and 10,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate.*
These experts calculate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species will become extinct each year.
If the low estimate of the number of species out there is true - i.e. that there are around 2 million different species on our planet** - then that means between 200 and 2,000 extinctions occur every year.
But if the upper estimate of species numbers is true - that there are 100 million different species co-existing with us on our planet - then between 10,000 and 100,000 species are becoming extinct each year.
*Experts actually call this natural extinction rate the background extinction rate. This simply means the rate of species extinctions that would occur if we humans were not around.
** Between 1.4 and 1.8 million species have already been scientifically identified.
So a dozen species a day, easy. We don't even know who they are.
Here's to them.
Oh, there's the bell.

"If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

I thought he was great in a number of films, but the one that most leaps to mind is Mona Lisa

H. R. Giger, 5 February 1940 — 12 May 2014
Probably his most famous work (OK, maybe 2nd most famous work after the alien in "Alien"):

His stuff in Dark Seed (mentioned in the wiki) was terrifying. I don't know if you've seen his original sketches of the facehugger and the alien Minnemooseus, more sexual than the ones in the films.
Very unique artist, enjoyable because his work was disturbing.

Okay, probably an obscure person for most.
Not only has his writings and research provided me countless hours (days?, weeks?) of interest and adventure, it also inspired many to travel to Transylvania and explore the real Dracula.

Maya Angelou 4-4-28 to 5-28-14
Phenomenal Woman
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It’s the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can’t touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can’t see.
I say,
It’s in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.
Now you understand
Just why my head’s not bowed.
I don’t shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It’s in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
’Cause I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

Tiananmen
Seemed most appropriate here. Tribute to the liberty that might have been.

Rik Mayall (7 March 1958 — 9 June 2014)
At the time I saw him in 1980 or so, I thought Rik was one of the funniest guys I've ever seen on TV. He and and Ade Edmondson were absolutely brilliant on the 'Young Ones'.
Gone at 56.
