Re: Let the Internet rule!
That's what the people want and in a democracy the people should get what they want. Of course they have to live with the consequences so when they start teaching Islam in the public schools in Dearborn Mi. that comes with the deal.
What happens when the majority passes laws depriving the minority of the right to participate in the political process? Or agree to strip unpopular groups of some of their rights. They majority will never have to face any consequences for having done so.
Simple majority rules for whose neighborhood gets to be the site for the next land fill?

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)

Re: Let the Internet rule!
The way that it is now is that a minority decides where the next land fill is.
Not a minority. The representatives of a majority. Glib, but silly.
What about the problem with a majority voting to strip away the minorities rights? For example denying gays the right to the political process by referendum?

Re: Let the Internet rule!
Do you think that the country is ready to overturn the 14th amendment?
Parts of it, yes.
But even as it stands, the 14th Amendment is not interpreted literally right now. If it were interpreted literally, there would be no point to either the ERA and the issue of gay rights would have been settled long ago.

Re: What do You Want?
Maybe, as polarized as the whole country seems to be right now, we would end up being just as grid locked and angry if the people were voting directly as we are with the assholes in Congress.
Maybe not grid locked. It seems to me that the public is going to make some call if there is a referendum.

Re: Referendum DD at End of Term/s
It is like the opposition comes from the idea that democracy is ok for me but not for everyone. Doesn't that seem a little hypocritical?
Yes, that would be hypocritical. But I don't see anyone expressing anything like that opinion.

Re: Referendum DD at End of Term/s
How many here think that they themselves should not be allowed to vote? While Omnivoruous is terrified of DD I am sure that he doesn't think that we should be terrified of him voting.
That's a gross misrepresentation of the objections to your proposal.
There are advantages to operating a sizable country or state as a democratic republic rather than as a direct democracy. One of the advantages is that I don't have to be an expert on every conceivable thing on earth, and that I can spend most of my time doing the things I am particularly good at, which does not include deciding on a zoning issue on some street in this town that I never visit or whether a stop light ought to be installed on a street I'm not likely to visit.
In fact there are some problems for which I value the opinions of the experts far more than I value the opinion of the mob. I don't trust most people's ability to make themselves experts. I am a little more trusting of their ability to recognize someone else's expertise when they see it.
No, I don't want to have people in Tennessee vote on whether they can hog all the water from the Chattahoochee river before it flows into Georgia. I want some smart people representing each state to sit down and work out a plan. I don't want to have to quit my day job to weigh in on things.
