All Dogs Go to Heaven, All Cats Get to Vote
Buzsaw writes:
I would say you've hit on something here. Our cats have always had a selfish mind of their own, regardless of how much we train them. We've been able to train our dogs to conform to the mind of us, their owners. They delight in serving our interests, protecting us and pleasing us as we provide for the animal's needs.
[abe:]We creationists tend to serve the interest of our owner, acknowledging and pleasing him, as he trains us. He protects us and provides our needs.
So let me get this straight. You are saying that dogs are the slavish followers of the authoritarian figure, while cats are the free thinking members of what they would consider a democracy.
Is that why most dogs serve no purpose other than to stroke the ego of the owner, while any worthwhile cat earns its living by destroying vermin?
Are you one of those communists Glen Beck keeps crying over?

The idea of the sacred is quite simply one of the most conservative notions in any culture, because it seeks to turn other ideas - uncertainty, progress, change - into crimes.
Salman Rushdie
This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It’s us. Only us. - the character Rorschach in Watchmen

Every Dog (and Cat) has it's Day
A rather late reply, but I suppose better than never.

My dogs get a few a week during the summer. My dogs are the best mousers I have ever known.
Back when I lived next to an old brewery now known as the Hammel Museum in Socorro, NM, we had a female cat named Shorty that was quite petite, perhaps six pounds. The old building was overrun with rats and her count was easily a few a week despite their relative size.
However, the crown belongs to a neighbor's beagle back when I was a kid in Fresno. My neighborhood was surrounded by fig orchards which were infested with a root eating rodent the size of a hamster which were locally called gophers. Now we all know pregnancy changes a female mammal's hormonal environment, but this dog went from Gandhi to TX100 overnight, furiously digging these rodents from their burrows all its waking hours. I figure a half-dozen a day at least must have been considered slim pickings, considering the neighbor's front yard -- which looked like some gopher version of the aftermath of Pickett's Charge -- despite their desperate efforts to keep up appearances.

The problem with knowing everything is learning nothing.
If you don't know what you're doing, find someone who does, and do what they do.
