Re: Some Facts
A couple came into the store the other night, whom we had caught--deterred from shoplifting before. She had the audacity to take items off the shelf(we had no photo proof, but saw the spots where the items used to be) and wanted to "rturn" them. He stole some expensive items from starbucks and went in to the bathroom with them, emerging with only his backpack. We are not security so we could not detain them. She appeared to be high on something such as amphetamine.
My point? Yes, we could be accused of profiling and no, we had no ironclad proof. Im not sure why I take it personally, but our store is on the verge of closing since we dont make enough money...and these people seem to me to be stealing from I myself. I would have them beaten if I could hire some thugs....thats how angry I feel towards them.

Employee Theft

Does the "we" that does the estimating do their share of stealing too?
Im sure that some employees steal, but as far as I know, not many at my store---apart from a free fountain pop now and then.

As PurpleDawn pointed out in Message 10, any busness can have a problem with employee theft, not just retail stores.
I had a supervisor tell me once that the most common thing employees steal is time. (Mind you, we were allowed to breathe on company time as long as it didn't interfere with our work.)

Revisiting An Old Problem
I have been with the same chain now for 14 years, after getting my job back last December. They moved me to another store closer to the urban corridor of homeless people in town. I see a different sort of theft than I saw in the suburbs.
These people(the thieves, of all shapes sizes and backgrounds) brazenly come in, grab expensive items (to return later, presumably) and walk out the door!
It's not like people even have a conscience anymore. My original complaint still stands--I fear we have a problem with a national sense of entitlement at each others expense!

Well, if you worship individual initiative, you're gonna see behaviour that favors the individual instead of the group. Crime is just the ultimate expression of free enterprise.

Re: Revisiting An Old Problem
Most low grade shoplifting - is that just a UK word? - funds drug or alcohol addiction. If they steal food they're generally street homeless too.
Occasionally you'll get organised stealing of small expensive goods - perfumes, electric razors, DVDs - they tend to be more organised, often in teams. Sense of entitlement? maybe. Also a sense if need.

Gosh I wonder if it has anything to do with treating the Ten Commandments as so much trash? Along with Leftist entitlement politics of course.

Nope, it doesn't.

Not in my experience, generally it's much more earthly - addiction, homelessness, poverty, mental illness and very occasionally the devious and corrupt. In other words sad, mad and bad. All human life is here.

No, Faith. Precolumbian Incas stole stuff on occasion. They knew not about Ten Commandments, and probably didn't have goats to seethe in their mother's milk anyway. Llamas, now - maybe.

Jesus was a leftist.

Of course, what you call Leftist entitlement was what Jesus command us to do. It is also called compassion, empathy, charity, good manners, reasonableness, honesty; you know, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, shelter the homeless, protect the weak, teach the children. It's called Christianity.

Jesus commanded us to do it, not governments. We are not to be forced to give, but to give because we want to. Government forces it on us.

Re: Revisiting An Old Problem
Those who don't have the Ten Commandments are not held responsible for them, but we are because we had them and threw them away. Thou shalt not steal. Says God. Might stop some stealing.

Jesus was a Leftist Socialist Communist
Faith writes:

Bullshit. The Government does what the people want and what they cannot do except collectively.
Jesus said fed the hungry. Period. If the way to do that is collectively then that is the right way to do it.
Jesus said shelter the homeless. Period. If the way to do that is collectively then that is the right way to do it.
Jesus said protect the weak. Period. If the way to do that is collectively then that is the right way to do it.
Jesus said heal the sick. Period. If the way to do that is collectively then that is the right way to do it.
Jesus said clothe the naked. Period. If the way to do that is collectively then that is the right way to do it.
Government is simply a tool to let us work collectively.

I can't wait until you have to explain all that to Him. Boy is that going to be fun.
