Re: News Break
Yeah, but you've got to look at the other side of the story. Yes, she was accidentally shot by her two-year old son, but if instead of being a toddler he'd been a Bad Guy With A Gun, then her gun would have ensured her perfect safety. Now as we all know you are much more likely to encounter a Bad Guy With A Gun in WalMart than a toddler, so the tragic results of her prudence and forethought shouldn't be held against the poor innocent gun.

Lol. Even when you bring the toddler with you?
Okay. Let me play 'faux righteous indignation'.
How dare you show such disdain for the low probability of maiming from a possible, potential, theoretical bad guy over the actually present toddler.

Re: News Break
When will you get it Percy? Guns don't kill people, toddlers kill people. If that mum had had another gun, she could have shot her child before the child shot her. What we need is more guns not less.

Re: News Break
A thought for a letter of condolence the NRA could send to the woman's family:
"Dear [ ],
We are sorry to hear of the tragic loss of [ ]. We are sure that you will agree that this was a terrible accident, which had nothing to do with the inherent danger of carrying a loaded gun around with you.
We hope that you will understand, and take comfort from the fact, that her death is a sacrifice we are willing for you to make, so that we can maintain the fuzzy, warm illusion that we can prevent a burglary or mass shooting every other week, through our professional and John Wayne-like use of our beautiful guns.
Yours, in solidarity."

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: News Break, once more once more once more
It's okay Percy, because she had a permit for a concealed weapon, that automatically makes it a good shoot.
And because she was not shot by a bad actor with a gun, then she must have been the bad actor with the gun, and that justifies the shooting ...

There's something wrong with the software here that I'm only allowed to vote for this once.

More Breaking News
More breaking news about the mother killed by her 2-year old son:
A few excerpts from the article:
Guns were a big part of Rutledge's life.
A very big part.
"She was not the least bit irresponsible," her father-in-law, Terry Rutledge said, in a brief interview with The Associated Press.
She left her handgun with the safety off in her purse next to her 2-year old, but she's not irresponsible? It's a terrible tragedy that she was killed, but it was her gun and her fault. Imagine if her 2-year old had killed some other random customer in the Wal-Mart. Well, thank God she was protected from attack.
Terry Rutledge told The Washington Post that Veronica Rutledge and her husband practiced at shooting ranges and each had a concealed weapons permit. He said for Christmas this year, her husband gave her the purse with a special zippered pocket for a concealed weapon.
A special zippered pocket that she apparently didn't use.
She was an employee of the Idaho National Laboratory near Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she was a nuclear scientist.
Unbelievable. Some brilliant people I've known were heavy smokers, but of course, smoking is addicting. I wonder if gun ownership is like an addiction.
Like other Western states, gun rights are a big issue in Idaho. State lawmakers passed legislation earlier this year allowing concealed weapons on the state's public college and university campuses.
Also unbelievable.

Re: News Break
I heard this on NPR driving home and my first thought ... OK my second ... OK, my third thought was how could the NRA spin these. I think I have it.
"The loss of this devoted mother and these poor children is certainly a heavy burden, but True AmericansTM always stand ready to pay the costs of freedom."
I thought I was being facetious but then it hit me. You know there are those buffoons out there thinking exactly that. Poe's Law.

The reports I've seen say that the gun was in the zippered purse. But that detail may be wrong.
Apparently mom left the 2 year old in a shopping cart with the purse. Unfortunately, no thief happened by to steal the purse before the kid got ahold of it.

Re: More Breaking News
I suppose there might be some missing context which might make the following not seem to be the height of gun nut insensitivity, but maybe not.
http://www.usatoday.com/...4/12/31/toddler-shot-mom/21101833
quote:
We rail against gun control laws as unnecessary and misguided punishments against law-abiding gun owners, then in the span of 4 months, two children are left with the emotional trauma and mental anguish of having taken the life of an adult who should have known better...
What's even worse, the anti-gun-rights advocates ... now have yet another case to highlight in the name of disarming the public," he said. Stern hosts a weekly radio show called The Firing Line on KFKA-AM, Greeley, Colo.
That's right. Stern believes that the real tragedy from a tot shooting his mom is that it provides talking points to gun control advocates.
