Author | Topic: Atheists can't hold office in the USA? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The big problem is that in most cases it is hard to modify Constitutions but it is easy to pass laws that would override and nullify certain provisions.
Politicians generally take the path that is least likely to hurt their reelection chances. Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Application of the laws might turn out to be unconstitutional but the laws themselves cannot be unconstitutional since they are parts of Constitutions.
They are also local in nature and I don't know of any atheist blocks in any state strong enough to get support to change them when there are, as you say, overriding laws already. The problem is that they are not a problem.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Not quite.
The question is "Since the prohibitions are not enforceable and in fact requirements in those states often have been changed so that the question of belief in a Supreme Being never even get asked is there any reason to risk trying to change the Constitutions?"Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

The current Maryland Constitution was adopted in 1867.

Tangle writes: So to have have it still on the statute books, not simply as a bygone relic of how things used to be, but to be pulled out when it suits regardless of it's ineffectiveness, is a signal of a different kind is it not? No it is not. But it is worth a chuckle or three on a really dull news day. But the answer to the topic is of course, "Nonsense, atheists can hold any political office in the US if they get elected."Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Tangle writes: We've moved on from that. The question now is whether these redundant laws are still being waved around and having an effect. I've no idea, have you? Do you care? But that too has been answered. They cannot have any effect. The only possible value is it gives folk something to complain about and that in turn gives many of us something to laugh about.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

You need to remember that it is unlikely that even one percent of a State's population have ever read their Constitution.
Let me step aside for a second and see if I can give a short example of the extent apathy in the US when it comes to such matters. Some background. The US Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, Maryland. Annapolis is also the State Capital and at one time the US Capital. One major sporting even held annually in Maryland is the Preakness, the second race in the US Triple Crown for horses. Maryland has a State anthem. The first verse says:
The despot's heel is on thy shore, Maryland! My Maryland! His torch is at thy temple door, Maryland! My Maryland! Avenge the patriotic gore That flecked the streets of Baltimore, And be the battle queen of yore, Maryland! My Maryland! Now the song was written during the US Civil War and the Despot mentioned is Abraham Lincoln and the torch was the Federal Troops and Navy that held the city and port under Marshall law. So to the funny part. Each year before the start of the Preakness the US Naval Academy Glee Club sings Maryland! My Maryland! No one objects or comments that it is a subversive tome and Federal Troops are singing a song written to condemn Federal Troops and the Federal Government.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

Petro writes: If you will not sign this then I do not believe you should hold elective office in the United States. You don't know jackshit about US History do you? What the hell does the Declaration of Independence have to do with holding elective office in the US? Sheesh, I did not think it was necessary to go over 7th. grade social studies here but I guess it is. The rules for holding federal office in the US are laid out in the US Constitution. Article one covers the rules for Congress while Article two covers the Executive Branch. Congress means the Senate and House of Representatives while the Executive Branch means in President and Vice-President FYI. Article three covers the Judicial Branch which is the Supreme Court and any inferior Federal courts. If you like I can print out transcripts of the pertinent Articles for you.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I think it's a great example of how pitiful atheists really are. They need to claim even those who deny being atheists as members.
But fundies are always fun to watch whether it is theistic fundies or atheist fundies.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!
