Re: The girls can sing
Not to disagree, but one must always wonder what and how much electronic sweetening was applied.
Technology can do a pretty good job of making a crappy singer sound pretty good, and probably can also make a good singer sound pretty bad.
Also, while I do like some good vocal wailing, I wonder if such is relatively easy compared to doing lyrics.

The girl can sing (rasta way)
Maybe not as sonically impressive, but this version does have more soul (but then, your girl has a pigment impairment problem).

Re: The girls can sing
Yeah could be I suppose but great music comes from the gut no matter what the instrument. From the washing board to the mixing board it is all just sound. If it can send shivers down your spine then it makes the grade.
What a great song.

Not just another Bowie cover
Commander Hadfield is not bad. But it's location, location, location!
ABE:
Correction: On second listening: Hadfield's voice isn't great, but I still like this video.

Went to David Lindley solo concert tonight
I go to damn few live music events, but David Lindley played a solo concert tonight in Duluth, Minnesota.
David Lindley (musician) - Wikipedia
quote:
David Perry Lindley (born March 21, 1944, San Marino, California, United States) is an American musician who is notable for his work with Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, and other rock musicians. He has worked extensively in other genres as well, performing with artists as varied as Curtis Mayfield and Dolly Parton. He has mastered such a wide variety of instruments that Acoustic Guitar magazine referred to Lindley, not as a multi-instrumentalist, but instead as a "maxi-instrumentalist" in a cover story about his career to date in 2005. The majority of the instruments that Lindley plays are string instruments. They include (but are not limited to) the acoustic and electric guitar, upright and electric bass guitar, banjo, lap steel guitar, mandolin, hardingfele, bouzouki, cittern, bağlama, gumbus, charango, cmbş, oud, weissenborn, and zither.
http://davidlindley.com/
http://davidlindley.com/instruments.html
He played a variety of electro-acoustic "guitars" and also sang and told stories.
His main instrument were several varieties of Weissenborn lap steel guitars.
quote:
Weissenborn or H. Weissenborn is a brand of lap slide guitar manufactured by Hermann Weissenborn in Los Angeles in the 1920s and 1930s.
These instruments are now highly sought after, and form the base for most non-resonator acoustic lap steel guitars currently produced. It is estimated that fewer than 5,000 original instruments were produced, and it is unknown how many now survive. The signature feature of Weissenborn guitars is the hollow neck, effectively a highly adapted body chamber that runs the entire length of the body, making conventional playing completely impossible.
The name Weissenborn is now commonly used to describe this style of instrument in general, with H. Weissenborn and modern factory or luthier reproductions being referred to as Weissenborn or Weissenborn-style guitars.
He owns a number of the old Weissenborn guitars, which currently go for c. $5000 each (if I recall what he said correctly). He, however, said that the more modern Weissenborn style guitars are sonically vastly superior.
He also played what I thought he referred to as a banjo, although it seemed to actually be a somewhat banjo shaped guitar. He also played oud. In all, he used about 6 different instruments.
His playing tonight was rather abstract, including a rather twisted version of "Mercury Blues", a tune he recorded on the first El Rayo-X album. He also did 2 or 3 Warren Zevon tune, all of which were obscure to me (no Werewolves of London or the other best known WZ tunes). There was quite a bit of middle eastern tonalities involved.
The signings and chatting session after the concert was also great. I now have a Lindley signed CD of the Henry Kaiser/David Lindley "Encounters At the End of the World" album, which is music from a documentary movie soundtrack.
quote:
Encounters at the End of the World is a 2007 American documentary film by Werner Herzog. The film studies people and places in Antarctica.

Music for the road
On my trips this summer I have spent time in vehicles with my 4 travel companions. One is 70, two are 68, one is 50, and one is 48. We all have different music tastes, but we all have pretty extensive rock collections. I like Pink Floyd and also David Gilmour by himself. Moody Blues, ELO lots of others.
Anyway, we were driving down the road in an intense thunderstorm and the 2 young ones were in the front and at the moment in charge of sound. Some music came on that I kind of recognized but couldn't name or name the band. Loud, heavy guitar, I liked it a lot. Turned out it was the Scorpions, and I knew a lot of their songs but not lately and I just could not remember being aware of them as a band.
Since I have been home I have picked up a number of their CDs and I mostly like it. They have been playing for 50 years, imagine that.
I am going to start at the beginning and read through the thread, maybe I will find some more music from the past that I like.
