The unit in question ("Regulars, by God!") could be any battalion descending from the elements of Winfield Scott's brigade at the Battle of Chippawa (5 July 1814), where it had been said - perhaps not accurately - that the enemy commander, British Brigadier General Phineas Riall, having mistaken the force for a detachment of militia owing to their grey uniform jackets, was surprised by the brigade's advance in a frontal assault that resulted in the British being defeated and forced to withdraw.Finding that he was under attack by troops other than the contemptible and easily broken militia he expected to quickly repulse, Brigadier Riall was reputed to have exclaimed in chagrin: "Those are regulars, by God!" as Scott's brigade closed ranks and came in with the bayonet.The title antedates the Mexican-American War. One of the regiments descending from a unit in Scott's brigade is the 22nd Infantry, which was a part of the 4th Infantry Division through World War II. One of the 4th ID (Mechanized) battalions presently serving in Iraq is the 1st of the 22nd Infantry, and is therefore entitled to be called "Regulars, by God!"------------------

Hey moron, read the link. I understand that the motto came from something that was not a religious reference. The unit's commander has taken it further and the article explicitly makes that point.The fact that this has already come up as an issue and been dealt with in this thread makes your post extra ridiculous.Perhaps instead of speaking out so much, you should shut your yap and read slow enough to understand what is being said before replying.

There are many religious nuts that view Iraq (and our general war on terror) as a crusade. These include the very religious leaders who Bush interacts with regularly. If you do not understand that then you aren't getting out too much.In particular case I was addressing it was a unit commander that was treating his troop's activity in Iraq as part of a religious crusade, and higher ups were not putting a stop to it.If you want to argue that the Iraq War was a great idea, start a thread on it. But even if you take that position, I cannot believe you'd agree with the unit commander's actions in the linked article.Read the article Neil, and then come back and give your opinion.------------------

Since you weren't here for the original interchange, I expect you to maintain at least a semblance of relevance to the discussion.That said, I do think that you are capable of reading English as a native speaker and thus are capable of detecting turns of phrase that indicate that a statement is sarcastic or symbolic or any of the other ways in which a statement is tagged by context to be taken some way other than literally.

By reading for context.Or is English a second language for you? Every language has their ways of indicating that a statement is not to be taken literally. If you are unfamiliar with the language, then you may not be aware of the specific ways in which the language does it but if you are a native speaker, then we would expect you to be able to recognize context.

You did not reply to what I said. If you notice it was not just about a motto, there was this word I used that linked it to the rest of the sentence which was even more important. The word was "and".Amazingly it seems you still haven't finished the sentence or read the link. This was not about a speech some officer made. It is about the ACTIONS of driving his men into hazardous situations and asking to be shot at because he believes God is protecting his unit... oh yeah and by the way that is why he applied the greater meaning to that unit's motto.Why don't you not be a total jerk and read everything through slowly, perhaps twice, before responding. There was no expectation on my part that anyone be a mind reader. That's why I provided a link.And on your retirement giving you more free time than me... exactly how old am I and what do I do for a living? I had a funny thought.
