Author | Topic: I need some help on a reply to a creationist... | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Some creationist on another board I go to posted an article, and I really don't know how to handle it. Here is what he posted:
"Something interesting I found on this subject.Originally printed in the Miami Herald (July 27, 1987) by Jim Bishop, reprinted in the Reader's Digest (Oct., 1988 issue)... "There is no God?" There is no God. All of the wonders around us are accidental. No almighty hand made a thousand-billion stars. They made themselves. No power keeps them on their steady course. The earth spins itself to keep the oceans from falling off toward the sun. Infants teach themselves to cry when they are hungry or hurt. A small flower invented itself so that we could extract digitalis for sick hearts. The earth gave itself day and night, tilted itself so that we get seasons. Without the magnetic poles man would be unable to navigate the trackless oceans of water and air, but they just grew there. How about the sugar thermostat in the pancreas? It maintains a level of sugar in the blood sufficient for energy. Without it, all of us would fall into a coma and die.Why does the snow sit on mountaintops waiting for the warm spring sun to melt it just at the right time for the young crops in farms below to drink? A very lovely accident. The human heart will beat for 70 or 80 years without faltering. How does it get sufficient rest between beats? A kidney will filter poison from the blood, and leave good things alone. How does it know one from the other? Who gave the human tongue flexibility to form words, and a brain to understand them, but denied it to all animals? Who showed a womb how to take the love of two persons and keep splitting a tiny ovum until, in time, a baby would have the proper numbers of fingers, eyes and ears and hair in the right places, and come into the world when it is strong enough to sustain life? There is no God?" ------------------"The only thing necessary for the Triumph of Evil is for Good Men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke Like to talk about Politics? Want to Bash Bush? WTF? The whole little riff is argument from "I haven't studied this at all, but it sure looks complicated!" And the piece I quoted isn't even related to reality......

Does it even need a response? It's unapologetic treacle. Why not just respond with a picture of Jeffy from Family Circus stretching his arms out wide and saying, "Jesus wuvs you THIS MUCH!"

Hey, Dan, you can do cartoons - how about drawing me one of little Jeffy saying "Jesus says you really suck!"

Well, this should tide you over. Unfortunately, Family Circus desecration is kind of an old joke.

On the first pic it says: "All Your Base Are Belong To Billy!"
How old is this joke? [This message has been edited by M82A1, 12-30-2003]

On the fourth pic it say: "Somebody Set Up Us The Bomb!" Damn, I didn't realize that game was so popular!

I'm having a hard time believing this was published in a newspaper or Reader's digest, unless it was in a letters to the editor column. These organizations have fact checkers right?
It's difficult to choose my favorite fact... 1) The earth spins itself to keep the oceans from falling off toward the sun. 2) Without the magnetic poles man would be unable to navigate the trackless oceans of water and air, but they just grew there. (this one is a double bonus, forgetting navigation by stars, sun, and deadreckoning, and talking like magnetic poles grow like mushrooms) 3) Who showed a womb how to take the love of two persons and keep splitting a tiny ovum until, in time, a baby would... come into the world...? (This writer is apparently unaware of my parents or victims of rape or birth defects or the fact that over 60% of conceptions result in miscarriages... not to mention penis's, testes, and sperm). If you want to respond to a person who posted this why not say something like... "... No God set the earth in the center of the universe, it just happened to appear there by chance. And no God put the sun in orbit around the earth at the exact right distance that it would not burn the earth or melt the celestial sphere behind it, it was able to calculate this distance on its own... Really, no God did this, because none of it is true. And you know who figured it out? Scientists. Know who didn't figure it out? People that kept ascribing things they did not understand to the direct intervention of a God. These are the same type of people that today believe what keeps the oceans on earth is earth's rotation, not gravity. There may be a God, but evidence indicates he did not give everyone a functioning brain, or perhaps the good thought to use it." ------------------holmes [This message has been edited by holmes, 12-30-2003]

Dude, everybody heard that. It was the flavor of the month for like 6 months. I have a T-shirt that says "All your base are belong to us" on the front and "Somebody set up us the bomb!"
Hell, I've played the game, even. I dressed up as C.A.T.S. for Halloween two years ago. If you've ever plugged a computer in you've probably encountered the "all your base" meme.

I replied to his last post, and this is what he replied: "Since science is one of my many interests, I can tell you that without gravity and the earth's rotation the oceans would fall off the earth. So would the atmosphere which is why there is none on the moon (too little gravity).
But how did evolution start in the first place? Who created evolution?"
