Re: The results
I was disappointed that one of my setups did not work well. I had never mounted that lens on a digital camera before so I need to practice with it and experiment a bit. It should capture sharper images plus fill the frame.

Re: The results
I fiddled with my Questar and managed to get some pretty good shots of tonight's almost-full moon. So, I'm ready for the next blood moon.

Re: Spirit Be Damned.
If you truly and deeply believe it is wrong to find meaning in an eclipse, you are mad.
I don't believe any such thing. I know it is wrong to find some supernatural meaning in an eclipse. Especially, as history shows, that meaning is then used to take undue advantage of others, even to kill.
Cultural History of the Luna and Solar Eclipse in the Early Roman Empire
I suggest you find better things to worry about, though, than what some folks think of the moon.
This has nothing to do with what some fools think of the moon. This has to do with the manipulation of superstition in giving any kind of "meaning" to such events when we know for a fact such "meanings" are not there.
If you want to see meaning in a blood moon you are so entitled. My job is to point out how incredibly stupid that is.

My union, The Amalgamated Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries and other Professional Thinking Persons does not have a lot of influence in this industry on this planet so the pay scale is, unfortunately, quite low. But, being a construct of intelligent beings rather than a purely natural phenomenon, the position is fraught with deeper meaning offering great rewards in job satisfaction and personal fulfillment.

Most likely true.

Clearly false. There CAN be a LOT wrong with it. An obvious example would be if you take the blood moon to "mean" the end of the world and you do everything in your power to accelerate the process.

Re: The results
That is a great picture!
Sadly, I couldn't see squat here. Central Florida was overcast during the night.
Initially, I could have sworn I saw the outline of an orange-glow as the moon was surfacing. But it turned out it was a reflection of Donald Trump's hair that originated from my Hi-Def TV and manifested on my window.

Re: Spirit Be Damned.
Once again you are inventing an argument and calling it mine to avoid dealing with the argument I am actually making.
You are not making an argument. You claim that it is somehow useful to attach meaning to eclipses and perhaps to other astronomical phenomena. I've invited you to support that claim with an example or argument, and you've yet to provide anything remotely looking like an argument. Instead you've attempted to make the fact that I don't accept your assertion about me somehow.
Perhaps you've given me your answer. You don't have diddly squat. Your response is that people who are questioning you or who cite evidence that attaching false meanings is harmful ought to just bug off.
Typical Jon style argument. Jon speaks, asserts, and brooks no disagreement.

Your orange has got some mold on it. You need a fresher orange. This is the kind of thing grandkids love to do. Tell them Grandpa needs a really nice orange with no bad spots on it and the next day they'll present you the most beautiful orange you've ever seen. With a loving bow on it no less. That's what grandkids do.

Re: Spirit Be Damned.
No, I don't. I claim that there is nothing wrong with it.
1. You've claimed more than that.
Jon writes:
It can also mean compassion for others and motivation for self-improvement.
Jon writes:
but I think it's what makes us human and our lives worth living.
But when asked, you cannot cite any examples of assigning meaning to natural phenomena doing so other than death and disease. But death and disease have ramifications that do not require assigning false meanings to them. Their consequences are motivation enough for finding compassion. Nothing is gained by claiming that such things happen for false reasons or have meanings beyond those consequences.
2. In response to AZPaul3's claim that history shows that such beliefs are used to harm people, which is clearly counter to your claim that 'there is nothing wrong with it', your response was stuff like the following:
If you truly and deeply believe it is wrong to find meaning in an eclipse, you are mad.
So what does an eclipse mean, Jon? If your answer is something other than the arrangement of astronomical bodies, I can guarantee that your meaning is incorrect. And where among all of your post have you provided anything more than assertion and dismissal?

Re: The Other Side of the Eclipse Equation

Sure. The sun mugs for the camera when you go outside, but I'm on the fourth cloudy day since the day before the past lunar eclipse and I cannot even find a single star or planet or even the nearly full moon.
And that's what I'm blaming my poor member rating on. That and not having a camera that is not a phone. Not that I care about stuff like that.

It isn't about thinking. You said there is "nothing" wrong about "finding" meaning. When one "finds" meaning, one often acts.
