Re: Question
Can't call them because I don't have a phone. Maybe I could get someone else to call them.
Grrr... Totally unsat and uncaring service in my opinion.
I'd be happy to call them, but that would require you providing me with personal info. Can you get your brother to do it?

Re: Question
Faith correctly grumbles:
Can't call them because I don't have a phone.

This reminds me of the numerous instruction manuals that have a section on connecting to the internet. They all begin with something like "just go to Forbidden and download the connect app".

Re: Question
Thanks for the offer. I was thinking of my brother. I'll email him but first I'm suddenly so sleepy I can't stay awake. Old people need naps.

Re: Internet / phone problem
I finally turned my desk around so my back is to the wall and the cords are in the middle of the room where I can get at them easily. It's better feng shui too.
Wireless modem at the top of the cellar stairs. WiFi touch-screen laptop can be used anywhere in house or folded up and put away out of sight.

This must be a wireless modem. That would explain its not needing a wall jack.

Surely there is a wired connection brought into your house at some point. Because phone signals are not carried over wifi.

Can't reach my brother. I think this may sit until Monday unless I find a way to get my arm behind the bookcase.
Thanks for everybody's input.

They should have a "Contact Us" link on their webpage. Click on that and it should list several different ways of contacting them. One of them will be a phone number, but there will likely also be an email address, and another might be an online form, and another might be a "Chat Now" link.

Could you describe how many wires come out of what you're calling your "modem" and where they go?

I Think I Got This
Taking a shot here and making a guess that Faith's new DSL modem has an internal DSL splitter for her phone, like this diagram I found:
Faith, is there a place on the back of your modem to plug in a phone cord?
If yes, do you have a spare phone cord?
If yes, unplug the current phone cord from your phone and just drop it behind your bookcase where you'll never have to touch it again. Now, using the spare phone cord, plug one end into the back of the modem, and plug the other end into your phone.
If no, have your brother bring over a spare phone cord, then carry out the previous step.

Re: I Think I Got This
Faith, is there a place on the back of your modem to plug in a phone cord?
Yes, that's where the end that is now in the wall jack is supposed to go.
If yes, do you have a spare phone cord?
I might have as a matter of fact but finding it is probably out of the question.
If yes, unplug the current phone cord from your phone and just drop it behind your bookcase where you'll never have to touch it again. Now, using the spare phone cord, plug one end into the back of the modem, and plug the other end into your phone.
Somebody else suggested this too. Maybe I can find the cord. What a nice simple solution after spending days moving heavy things. Oh well, it needed to be done some time.
If no, have your brother bring over a spare phone cord, then carry out the previous step.
He may not be able to come down for days. I'm thinking of calling emailing a friend who has long thin arms. I hate to bother her but she may have time this afternoon.
Oh, and for all those who asked: Yes, the other end of the cord goes to the cordless phone charger.
But still nobody knows why I no longer need a wall jack? The modem plugs into a regular electrical outlet, there are no phone jacks anywhere that I know of once this one behind the bookcase is disabled.

Re: I Think I Got This
DSL is a way of carrying broadband Internet over the old copper telephone wires. The modem converts the signal on the wires to the standard computer networks - Ethernet and wi-fi. I don't see how a DSL modem could work without a wired connection to the telephone lines.
You should have had a connection for the old DSL modem - since it obviously wasn't plugged into the same jack as your phone - and you should have a connection for the new modem too.
I guess that you could have a modem somewhere else and the box you see is a router, not a modem - just a device for sharing the Internet connection. But it seems unlikely. Are you absolutely sure what you have is DSL ? I could maybe research it with some more information (provider, product name, make and model number of the "modem"). But without that information all I can say is that it doesn't sound like DSL.

Re: I Think I Got This
No I'm not absolutely sure it's DSL. It's something called U Verse that AT&T does. Someday maybe I'll read the envelope of information about it that they left with me. I just figured that someone here would recognize what it is and how it works from the description.
Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

Re: I Think I Got This
Looks like it's usually DSL, except in places where they take the optical fibre right to the house. Even then I'd expect a wired connection for the phones. Odd.
