Another computer question -wireless mouse
Anybody know why my brand-new AA batteries only last a couple of weeks in my new wireless mouse? The last battery lasted one week. Those in the keyboard haven't died yet but I've replaced the one in the mouse four times since I got it in July. The more "improvements" in computering the less I like them.
abe: GUESS: Playing card games? They do take a lot of mouse clicks. But then so does reading all the threads at EvC take a lot of clicks.
If I'm using up the battery with all those mouse clicks it's not worth having a wireless mouse.

wireless mouse
Thanks for your input. I'm going to try to refrain from the card games and see if it makes a difference.

Re: cords from modem
A "phone cord" and a "DSL cord" are the same thing, though you probably want a good quality phone cord if you're using it for DSL. Phone cords vary a great deal in cord quality and thickness, and in the quality of the connectors on the end, and they can be different colors (though usually grey, tan or white), so you might think you had two or three different kinds of cord connecting to your "gizmo," but they were all phone cords.
It's a phone cord going from the wall jack behind your bookcase into your modem.
I don't think so but perhaps someone else can enlighten.
There were originally two cords going to the wall jack through the filter gizmo; now there is only one, and it's not the phone cord; the phone cord now goes from phone to modem. That switch is what the first tech told me to do and he called it the "phone" cord.
The other cord which I thought was properly called the DSL cord, goes from modem to wall jack.
The one I'm calling the phone cord is a thin flattish white cord. The one I'm calling the DSL cord is a thicker round white cord.
Yes, that's how the back of my modem looks. Now with effort I can make out the word "Ethernet."
The diagram looks right. And it shows that the phone cord and the DSL cord are two different cords, as I said.
When you first posted the diagram I thought there was only one cord to the wall jack. My friend later found out there were two.

Re: cords from modem
DSL comes into your house over a phone cord.
OK that's clear if what's at issue is the type of cord itself, but DSL has to do with the internet and not the phone, it merely uses the phone line for its source of power, right?

stuck with a lemon?
so if you lose power your phone won't work now, even if the telephone line is OK
I know, that's why I said I regret getting this system though they weren't really giving me a choice. The only advantage to it is the discount they gave me, and the long distance calling I'm supposed to have free. But I don't like the idea of not having phone service in a power outage or when my computer crashes. I'm going to check out RAZD's links to cell phone possibilities, but I don't think it's right that I'm driven to that as a necessity. I think AT&T has put some of us in a dangerous position by taking away our independent phone system and there's some degree of fraud involved in that. I'm not going to protest, that isn't my thing, but it does bother me that they would do this to us.
ABE: I may end up being glad I have a cell phone though so it may work out in the end. It won't be much use here though because nobody gets cell reception inside their apartment and they all walk up and down outside "entertaining" the rest of us with their calls, oh joy.

Re: stuck with a lemon?
I might call them to find out if there are any options but I'm not up to it right now. They called ME in the first place to get on this new system because supposedly the neighborhood internet traffic is getting too heavy, so I'm not sure I could even go back to the way it was. Besides which it would involve another tech visit. No, I'm not up to it. And getting a cell phone may be possible and solve a lot of things at once. I've many times thought I should have one whenever I'm out. I may look into other service providers some time though.

Re: stuck with a lemon?
I don't think that your telephone service depends on your computer, only on the modem (which needs power) and the Internet connection. There's no reason why it should be like that.
You were right. Turned off the computer and still had the phone. That's a relief. That helps a lot. If it's only power outages and internet outages that can affect the phone I can probably live with that well enough.

Re: stuck with a lemon?
Thanks for the information. I'll keep it alongside RAZD's info about cell phones.
Now that I know that a computer crash wouldn't take down the phone I'm going to try to live with whatever other problems might occur. We do get power outages but they usually don't last more than a couple hours. One was caused when wind downed a power pole and that did take days to fix but that's too rare to worry about. If I run into problems I can't live with I'll have your suggestions at hand. Thanks.

I've been plagued with popups trying to get me to accept Windows 10 which I keep rejecting because my computer usually has to downgrade to older systems to run right so I don't want to tax it with a new system, and because I've heard about a lot of problems people have with Windows 10. The popups are very irritating, often derailing something I'm watching on Netflix, but they offer no way to end their interference.
Advice?
Also I've been getting calls from people with Indian accents claiming to be from Microsoft or Windows. I figure they are a scam and hang up on them.

I don't know my operating system. I thought it would be easy to find out but for Low Tech me it's not.

Others may be able to cope with "botched upgrades." For me it would be a nightmare I simply could not handle.

Just for the record, you probably would be better off biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 10,
OK, I'm going to start considering doing this because you and Percy have recommended it. I certainly don't want to mess with my computer settings which the other options involve so I'd leave things as they are rather than take on that problem.
But I'm afraid of Windows 10 being too much for my computer, apart from normal "botched upgrades." Techs often downgrade things to get my computer to function properly. I think I probably have Windows 7 because of such a downgrade way back when.
I have a lot of problems as it is with extreme slowness and the whole system hanging up from time to time. That has sometimes resulted from the popup suddenly appearing, and I often end up having to force-restart the system and even then it sometimes doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks very much. It's all rather overwhelming at the moment but eventually I'll make use of the advice here.
Thanks to all.
