I wondered about Hewlet Packard for a while too, but it's the wrong theme too.
PP cracked it for me in the end - the alliteration finally kicked a connection, and then it all fell into place.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Is there something about it that should make what kind of puzzle it is recognizable to anyone, or only to people more fluent with the puzzle world?

xongsmith and Tangle are both using the right approach/formula, but there's a theme which makes it possible to get all of the solutions. Dr A has given the clue to the theme, in emphasising the V in the topic title.

I haven't read any post that looked like it might include a clue. I'd first like to try to solve the puzzle with no help. But I'm not a puzzle person, and if it's not a letter substitution problem then I don't know what type of puzzle it is. If anyone should be able to figure out the type of puzzle it is then so be it, I'll figure out what I can, but if it helps to be familiar with various types of puzzles then I don't have that familiarity and am at a disadvantage.

I finally got one of these, namely 'SHVPM'.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)
History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. Martin Luther King
If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions? Scott Adams

The others follow a similar theme - though it helps a little with a couple of them to have young kids or grandkids ;-)

I don't believe that being familiar with various types of puzzles is a help. Fifty percent of the task here is figuring out what the puzzle is about. So don't give up on account of some perceived advantage for others that does not exist.

If you are utterly lost and want a proper clue that risks giving the game away entirely click peek.

Hey, Straggler, good to see you again.
You missed one small little detail, the "?" at the end. So where's your addition to the list? Make it a good one, now.

Oh. Well, maybe I'm the one who left. I get so confused.
Anyway, it's good to see you again.
