Why would anybody come from a "successful western culture" to this empty frozen wasteland? They enriched Canada by adding the best elements of their culture to the existing Canadian culture.
By the way, the Conservative Party and the Ku Klux Klan tried to keep my ancestors out of Canada because they didn't speak English.

Not even close. Laws apply to people IN the country, citizens or otherwise. They also apply to what we can do to people OUTSIDE the country - e.g. we can't indiscriminately shoot people on the other side of the line.

As I recall, at least one branch of your family is German, right? Speaking English is certainly a high priority for immigration I would think, but then the Germans did learn it, didn't they? Who cares what the KKK says about anything anyway, they aren't the government.

The point is that they weren't excluded because they were different.

I notice that you conveniently leave out the Conservative Party.

Well, golly gee, yes, we don't want people who are too different, or different in the wrong ways, we do want a coherent culture. What's wrong with that? It isn't because your family was "different," it was because they didn't speak English, something fairly easily rectified.
Yes I object to the KKK, not to the Conservative Party. You have a problem with that?

What's wrong is that we don't know beforehand which traits to arbitrarily pick and choose.

Indeed I do, since they had the same policies.

Sure we do, or we used to know. We want people who understand and will further the principles of a liberal democracy, and that is often half determined by where they come from.
I don't find it hard to distinguish between the conservatives and the KKK myself. And by the way, historically all the racist stuff in this country came from the Democrats.

And by the way, now it comes from the Republicans.

And historically the racists moved to the Republican party after WWII during the civil rights era.
What's your point?

So how do you determine what their beliefs are? Do you really think a government overthrower is going to declare their intentions when they come here?
Ask! When I go to US I have to fill out a form (online nowadays) which includes questions asking if I intend to engage in terrorist activities or try to overthrow the government of the United States. I'm sure they catch loads of people that way.

Yep, that makes perfect sense.
The Republicans have convinced a bunch of people that terrorist attacks by foreigners are the biggest danger that America or Americans face right now and in the immediate future. They can only think of a single possible solution to this danger that they imagine has carpet-bombed America with fear. Keep brown-skinned people out totally, absolutely, no matter what....oh, and carpet bomb some bad people somewhere, with actual bombs and also real fear that is based on lots of bombs falling in their region on top of trying to not have war crime atrocities/crimes against humanity committed against them by the monster piles of shit called isis.

Re: Race and ideology are not synonymous
Sorry but this whole argument is so ridiculous I need to pile on a little bit more.
Your wife may very well be native American, but the thing is I do not care and it has no bearing on anything. That you think so seems to make somewhat of the argument that you are.
You may have racist attitudes toward Native Americans or not. Whether you do or not has nor bearing on whether you have racist attitudes towards other people. I think thou doth protest too much.
The Guardian, an excellent newspaper, has broached this subject.

If we are clueless then we at least have a longstanding consistency about it. While just now reading The Family I learned that in the first decade of the 20th century before being admitted through Ellis Island you had to swear you were neither a bigamist nor an anarchist. I won't venture a guess how a bigamist might answer, but wouldn't an anarchist be honor bound to swear, "I am not an anarchist"?

I thought I was clear already that if they say they are Muslims you know they subscribe to a belief system that is declared in writing to be hostile to the American form of government. That's all you need to know.
