Faith, can you describe what the bootup screen looks like on your computer. From that we would be able to tell which version of Windows you are running. Here is a link to a website that has all the bootup screens over the years. Page 12 is XP, then Vista, 7, 8 and 10 follow.

Since the process is different in each version of Windows I thought it would be easier to have her identify the bootup screen.
You're right she probably should upgrade to Windows 10. I personally still haven't upgraded my computer but will do so soon. I wanted to see how many horror stories about botched upgrades hit the web before I took the plunge.

Just for the record, you probably would be better off biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 10, but if you don't want than there are a couple of options.
1) As Ramoss said, install the GWX Control Panel. Infoworld has a page about the steps to take to do so.
2) Microsoft has a page describing how to do so but it involves editing the registry and that can be a bit scary as you can render your computer inoperative if you mess it up.
I guess there are really is no good path for you to take on this as they all involve messing around with your computer settings.
Edited by kjsimons, : No reason given.
