Apparent Coyote/Moose agreement on a political point
What’s in a name? ‘Hillary’ by any other name would still be controversial
...some Americans, mostly women, don’t think the former secretary of state, U.S. senator from New York and first lady should be called by just her first name.
I think it’s pretty unjust, said Monica Warek, 23, on a recent visit to Washington from New York City. I think it shows the level of inequality that still exists in the workforce and just in general in society.
I think they need to recognize that, after 20 years of prominent exposure, Hillary has reached the point of only needing a single name. Not a thing of disrespect or respect, just a reality.
Now coy boy, who's your pick for Republican presidential candidate in 2016?

Nixon looking good (sort of)
Had to track down one of my old signatures, which included:
"Nixon was a professional politician, and I despised everything he stood for, but if he were running for president this year against the evil Bush-Cheney gang, I would happily vote for him." - Hunter S. Thompson

The Trump/Bill the Cat ticket
Way back in the old "Bloom County" cartoon, there was an extended series having Trump's brain in Bill the Cat's body.
Trump's body was crushed when his yachts anchor was accidentally dropped on the Donald, and to save him his brain was transplanted into Bill's body.
A couple of memorable lines were referring to wife Ivana as "the Trump frump" and referring to the litter box as "the Trump dump".

Minnesota Caucus numbers
Republicans - 113 of 126 districts reported:
MARCO RUBIO 36.57% 36.24%
TED CRUZ 28.74% 29.04%
DONALD J. TRUMP 21.37% 21.41%
Number Attending Caucuses-Republican : 100777 114230
Democrats - 64 of 121 districts reported:
BERNIE SANDERS 60.70% 61.08%
HILLARY CLINTON 38.55% 38.11%
Number Attending Caucuses-Democratic-Farmer-Labor : 86796 186646
I'm guessing that the more rural districts are the ones yet to come in (or maybe it's the large urban districts, that take more counting time???).
My little caucus was, of 15 votes, Bernie 13 (86.7%), Hillary 2 (13.3%).

John Oliver on Donald Trump
I'm surprised nobody has yet posted this. I first encountered it via here.
quote:
John Oliver did his usual brilliant job of being both funny and correct when going after Donald Trump and the ridiculous claims from his followers that he speaks the truth and is tough and manly and is a great businessman. None of those things are even remotely true. The best part is when Trump says I know lots of words. I have the best words.
21:53 long, and IMO worth it.

32 Celebrities Who Support Donald Trump - #21 Jesse Ventura
Some fairly rational people, some loons, and then there's Jesse Ventura. While one might argue against his political legacy, I do think he's a reasonably rational thinker.
Loading...
quote:
JESSE VENTURA: FORMER MINNESOTA GOVERNOR, FORMER WWE PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER & REALITY TV STAR
I shocked my staff today. I came in and said, ‘You know what, as far as the Republicans are concerned, I said I hope Trump wins.
I don't have the larger context of that quotation, but I interpret it as "The Republican party is a disaster area, and candidate Trump will be doing a valuable service by totally crashing the party".
I don't think Jesse is a Trump supporter (I presume he means Trump winning the nomination, not the presidency).

The real unemployment rate
Quoting the Donald:
"Our real unemployment is anywhere from 18 to 20 percent. Don't believe the 5.6. Don't believe it."
Not that I've investigated it personally, but this may be substantially true. There are a lot of unemployed that are not part of the official unemployed count.

Keep Bernie in the Senate (and spank the Donald hard)
I voted Bernie in the Minnesota caucus, and he did carry the state (and Donald came in 3rd in the Republican caucus) . I was and am, however, concerned about his age.
I think that Bernie did a valuable service by his POTUS run, bringing progressive issues forward, but now it's time to go back to the Senate where he's probably more valuable.
Elizabeth Warren's name is bouncing around, as either vice-president or a cabinet member. I feel that she too is more valuable in the Senate.
I love the Bern, but my impression is that the Bernie true believers, who seem inclined to go third party rather than Hillary, think that Bernie has magical powers to get his ideals implemented.
And I much agree that "moderate Republican" Hillary is better than loose cannon Donald (who might just be more liberal than Hillary). And Donald might be better that most or all of the other Republican offerings. But remember that I think Donald was running a comedy tour, not a political campaign. And I remember that some of the right here considered Al Franken to be a clown.
But I don't want Donald on my TV in a "reality" show, much less want him on TV as President.
I hope that Minnesota goes at least 75% Hillary.
OSLT.

Re: Wrong
I appreciate your sentiments (if not your sediments - I'm more of an igneous guy), but...
Until we have some sort of run-off system, I feel the need to vote for the lesser of two evils. And that means the Democratic candidate.
Texas is pretty sure (understatement?) to go Trump.
Minnesota is pretty sure (not as confident) to go Hillary. But I'm not about to chance doing a "protest vote".
If nothing else, we need to keep SCOTUS appointments out of the hands of a Republican and/or comedy routine.
But as long as House and/or Senate control remains Republican, even if the progressive ideal was elected President, it would seem to make little difference.

Citizens United comment
And yet I am not convinced that a #SHilIary nomination will be good for overturning citizens united -- she's more likely to go wall street and corporatist warmonger.
It don't wish to divert this topic into a big CU discussion, but I must add 1 comment.
Quite a while back I heard a rational opinion from some moderate to liberal source. The opinions essence was that the SCOTUS Citizens United decision was correct, albeit undesirable. Thus the need for a constitutional amendment.
I am not going to debate this detail further.

Re: One possible good outcome from il Donald winning
Or maybe the Republicans can elect the Donald so that they can impeach him and make the VP President.
But who's going to be the Vice President candidate? They might be even worse than Donald.
Essentially, I think the Donald has been making an effort to campaign against himself. That had been failing, but maybe now things are turning around (Failure is success, and success is failure - Or is that the other way around).
