Re: God versus Long John Silver
This is where I agree with jar that behavior (good, rational, mature behavior) is the indication of being on the right road. Not everyone on the right road needs to be outwardly religious but the fact is that if my particular belief is right and that Jesus is in fact the way to know God, Nobody on the right road would deny Him, though some may choose to simply behave and do good without the religious professions and theatrics. You could well be a humanist atheist your entire life, but again, if my belief is correct, it would only make sense that you had a time of communion and acceptance with God some day.
If we applied critical thinking, we would have to ask if it is possible for someone to have good, rational, mature behavior because of a belief in a deity that doesn't exist, and how we would tell the difference between behavior caused by a belief in a non-existent deity, and a belief in a real deity.

The fastest and most direct route to the airport . . .
You have already failed to use critical thinking. You think you know ahead of time that the airport is still in the same place. How do you know that it hasn't been magically poofed into a new location by Leprechauns?
Even more, you think you know that an internal combustion engine will continue working under the same laws of physics it always has. For all you know, the laws of chemistry has changed and the fuel in your gas tank now has the same flammability as water.
I think you can begin to see just how silly your criticisms are.

I don't see how those things resemble my criticisms at all.
I do.
How do you know that the airport will be in the same spot?
How do you know that gasoline will keep its same flammability due a constancy of physical laws?
If you just assume these things, are you failing to use critical thinking?

How would you apply critical thinking to scripture? Is there any evidence that scripture has errors?
That is the wrong question. What you should be asking is if there is any evidence demonstrating that it is true. That is how you apply critical thinking.
Must it be so? Faith is based on a conclusion, however...so you may have a point.
Conclusions flow from evidence. You have no evidence. You have faith.
Well...God gave us brains for a reason, I suppose.
Then why does religion ask you to shut off those reasoning skills and just believe?

When it comes to the supernatural are there any other options than accepting things on Faith?
That is exactly the same as believing in things that aren't true. They also have to be accepted on faith.
In other areas do all religions ask people to shut off reasoning?
If there is evidence to back a claim then it isn't called religion.

Re: >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Remix<<<<<<<<<<<<
Not quite true. There is evidence to back up much that is included in religion. Religion is far more complex than just the supernatural. There really is a Mount Olympus.
Believing in the existence of a Mount Olympus is not a religion. Believing that there are deities who sit atop Mount Olympus is a religion.
Believing that David Koresh was a real person is not a religion. Believing that he was the second coming of Jesus is (or was) a religion.
