Im not fully in touch with those feelings yet.ringo writes:
Lets use an analogy which shows the difference between fear and anxiety.
Who is? Of course we all make decisions based on a combination of logic and feelings, so being "in touch with your feelings" isn't an end in itself. Anxiety According to authors Sadock, Sadock, and Ruiz (2015), anxiety is a diffuse, unpleasant, vague sense of apprehension It is often a response to an imprecise or unknown threat. For example, imagine you’re walking down a dark street. You may feel a little uneasy and perhaps you have a few butterflies in your stomach. These sensations are caused by anxiety that is related to the possibility that a stranger may jump out from behind a bush, or approach you in some other way, and harm you. This anxiety is not the result of a known or specific threat. Rather it comes from your mind’s vision of the possible dangers that may result in the situation. Anxiety is often accompanied by many uncomfortable somatic sensations. Some of the most common physical symptoms of anxiety include: headaches muscle pain and tensionsleep disturbances tightness felt throughout the body, especially in the head, neck, jaw and face chest pain ringing or pulsing in ears excessive sweating shaking and trembling cold chills or hot flushes accelerated heart rate numbness or tingling depersonalization and derealization upset stomach or nausea shortness of breath feelng like you are going insane dizziness or feeling faint Fear Fear is an emotional response to a known or definite threat. Using the scenario above, let’s say you’re walking down a dark street and someone points a gun at you and says, This is a stick up. This would likely elicit a response of fear. The danger is real, definite and immediate. There is a clear and present object of fear. Although the focus of the response is different (real vs. imagined danger), fear and anxiety are interrelated. When faced with fear, most people with experience the physical reactions that are described under anxiety. Fear causes anxiety, and anxiety can cause fear. But, the subtle distinctions between the two will give you a better understanding of your symptoms and may be important for treatment strategies. Being in touch with your feelings allows you to face fear, for example. Anxiety is harder to face since it cannot be defined. Remember also that addictions are a mal-adaptive response to stresEssentially, knowing the feelings specifically helps one to face them rather than self medicate them. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." —Mark Twain " ~"If that's not sufficient for you go soak your head."~Faith Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.~Proverbs 28:26

No. I am anxious when addicted. I am fearful when sober.
Perhaps knowing that it is a concrete emotion I am facing helps me to stay sober.Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. Good morning, RAZD! Exercise is very important to me, as I have Type II Diabetes and my feet are growing numb and insensitive. Recovery has given me a much clearer picture of reality, duty, and priority.
My counselor asked me to meditate on the following question:
quote: When one hears a word such as cost one immediately thinks in terms of money. And it is true that I have spent a lot of money. A conservative estimate would be that over the course of 33 years that I have gambled, I spent close to $138,000.00. This is only one facet of cost, however. Gambling--more specifically an addicted brain, cost me in other ways. Perhaps my counselor wanted me to understand just how damaging my addiction was to me. On a positive note, I am exercising more, getting out more and reuniting with old friends as well as making new ones, and even posting at EvC more...if that counts! Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry.

Today is the hundredth day of sobriety and I am starting to feel fear ratyher than simply anxiety. The fear is about events, circumstances, and people in my past. Some of these problems are mean't for today....like the fear of losing my legs to diabetes or the fear that I wont get my job back and that I will be broke and sick in my older years.
Of course, God has blessed me and I have the intelligence and ability to fight these circumstances....but it is almost like ringo is prophetic---in another thread he says I have an obsession about having things done for me...and perhaps my fear is rooted way back in childhood about having to grow up without a father.(he died when I was 17) and I was always provided for and taken care of. Im not gonna get too psychoanalytical, but I will report that as of today I am experiencing some unfamiliar emotions.Chance as a real force is a myth. Thank you, Theodoric. That means a lot. According to Dr.Carnes, the emotions will intensify after roughly 130 days for several months. I plan on reporting my progress every 20 days or so...and recording what I feel. I have a counselor, the support of my church, and am attending a step group.
Now that the initial addiction is under control, my secondary addiction of emotional co dependence is looming large. I have always had friends younger than myself...many of whom are now like younger brothers--but at the time I met them I identified with them so much I nearly lived vicariously through them. As a future leader---I want to become a chaplain rather than just a volunteer--I need to be emotionally healthy. My 3rd addiction is overeating or hi sugar foods---which I cannot handle, being diabetic. What most people do not fully understand is that once I choose to become sober from all of my habits, the root cause of the addictions manifests as a deep pained anxiety which I have yet to identify. We all have our challenges in life, though---and my hope and prayer is that by my journaling this stuff, perhaps others can someday follow the sober path.Chance as a real force is a myth. Phat,in January writes: First and foremost, however, is a willingness to let go and use logic and reason. Experts say that the healing really starts after 150 days sobriety. i have never made it past 72 days in my life. Today is Day 105! I am facing pain and anxiety off and on, and hypothesize that I always have felt these things yet previously self medicated through addictions which i have now stopped. God plays a big role in my recovery, but He does not do it for me...He gives me the mindfulness to remain sober. I dont have anything new to report, but I sense that the feelings will intensify in the next ...oh lets call it 90 more days. Pray that I stay sober. I believe that God wills that I make it, but He wont stop me should I trick myself into a relapse.Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. I applied the 4 step method to my anxiety and also prayed and today my mind feels like im a new person!

It seems that I am in a feisty argumentative mood as day 107 is lived. I feel like defending and defining or redefining my faith as I believe it.
One Pastor challenged me---do I trust God or science? Personally I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. I definitely believe that trusting someone greater than I is crucial to success. Jeffrey Schwartz, in explaining his 4 step method, maintains that the way to overcome the stuck brain is to observe ones irrational feelings from a 3rd person perspective. He calls such a mindset the "impartial spectator".
Schwartz writes: So, that term, impartial spectator he used to mean that we can actually look from the outside into ourselves, taking the perspective of an impartial person. You can actually utilize a perspective of attention that is like standing outside yourself, like being another rational, fair-minded person who's viewing you and what you are doing and thinking, and has access to your inner experience. It is definitely one way to make it through the irrational feelings phase of healing.Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. My sobriety is continuing and by faith (and science) I am believing that my brain is healing...but the experts say that I cannot simply passively wait for change.
According to Psychology Today, Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience. The science behind recovery insists on active countering in order to restructure the brain from its old habits and patterns. Also, I have noticed that I am engaging in the same old pattern of arguments here at EvC in other topics with familiar opponents...and that i am fighting my tendency to fall back to the same answers that I am comfortable with. My only worry is that I will be compromising my belief if i simply look for alternatives... jar always told me that one characteristic of my ingrained beliefs was a sense of entitlement (which my gambling counselor also told me is common among addicts and particularly gambling addicts) and a preference towards fantasy over reality. Perhaps it will be helpful for me to employ critical thought as a vehicle towards rewiring my neuro-linguistic circuits as I strive to break the repetitive bondage of ingrained thought patterns that show signs of the addictive cycle. Nodody ever told me this would be easy! Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. I woke up this morning and felt very mindful. I feel in the moment. I also feel as if I can see my habits from the perspective of an Impartial Spectator a term originally coined by Adam Smith in the 18th century and now used by current researchers into how the Brain changes through sobriety, counter conditioning, and mindfulness.
I owe a debt of gratitude to my religious, theological and philosophical opponents here at EvC. By never agreeing with me, accusing me of "Word Salad" and "Meaningless Gibberish" whenever I defend my religious beliefs, they have forced me to question my beliefs through the lens of an impartial spectator. This has allowed me to analyse buzzwords and catch phrases from the perspective of non believers and to help me empathize more when I talk with people. At any rate, I feel that I am thinking outside of my usual box this morning, though I have little reason to change my beliefs...apart from allowing my impartial spectator to test them. Tonite I go to my 12 step group. Next week i meet with my counselor on Thursday. I am excited to be able to test Carnes theory regarding brain change at the 5th-9th month. I am almost in that zone!Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. I have been asking myself how long recovery is going to take.
They did some research....
The Brain Can Recover- but it Takes Time!! How the brain recovers from addiction is an exciting and emerging area of research. There is evidence that the brain does recover; in the image below shows the healthy brain on the left, and the brain of a patient who misused methamphetamine in the center and the right. In the center, after one month of abstinence, the brain looks quite different than the healthy brain; however, after 14 months of abstinence, the dopamine transporter levels (DAT) in the reward region of the brain (an indicator of dopamine system function) return to nearly normal (Volkow et al., 2001). Sidenote to EvC peanut gallery: This is Day 129 of my sobriety. The experts conclude that my brain has reset itself and that I am about to experience a flood of unfamiliar feelings in the coming months as I enter the main part of my recovery phase. I apologize in advance for any redundancy in my religious/philosophical discussions, but it is my way of increasing my understanding of positions different from my own. Thanks. Phat
******************************************************************** Here i am the day before Thanksgiving with no job---no retirement---unemployment about to expire--and no concrete evidence of anything relating to God. Issues: I am checking on a few leads in regards to employment. Hopefully God does not want to allow me to be poor and/or working in an entry level job. It would seem to be a waste of talent. I trust my neighbours but I lock my doors. Not every spirit out there is our neighbor. I trust Jesus but I test every evangelist, pastor,or teacher.Chance as a real force is a myth. I am now in a place that I have never been in before in my life. My earthly security (a union job) has been taken from me. I am unemployed and yet am still too proud to work at just any job---though I have been praying for God to put me where he wants me. Were I not holding on to this one accomplishment--being sober for longer than i have been in twenty years--I would likely be extremely depressed.
Perhaps because of my healing from my addicted brain, I am optimistic that I will rebound from my job loss. Reality is not kind, however. Because i lost my medical insurance, I lost two of the most potent drugs to fight my type II diabetes. My blood sugars are up, and I am concerned for my long range health. It seems that I am being forced to either be responsible or die. I always counted on other things besides myself to take care of me. I still trust Jesus...and am learning more about how to express my faith, but I am also learning a harsh lesson about responsibility and reality. There is no way to avoid it.Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. Jesus doesn't save, you do. I may do some of the work, but He gives me the strength and he sends others to help me at times. I cannot take full credit for my success nor can I take full blame for my failures. What I do know is that I am responsible. Jesus has already done His job. Day 136 is going well so far...last night I felt suddenly powerless and could have relapsed at any moment. The difference now versus 136 days ago is that back then I was stuck in gear and had to act out. Now, i can see the desires and compulsions rise and fall without having to act on them. I am experiencing the feeling of recovery. Do i take full credit for that or is it possible that God helped? (Rhetorical Question)Chance as a real force is a myth. My church is very active in the community...particularly the inner city. We have no fancy building---we meet in the gymnasium of a local community center.
We have a small yet loyal and active congregation of perhaps 30 members. Today is Day 137. I went to the Doctor and got advice on getting medicine for lower cost due to my current unemployment. I paid cash out of pocket for the visit---$80.00. They gave me some free samples of medicine. My sobriety is all that I have. I value it very highly and seriously. It may be all in the mind, but knowing that I can resist my addiction feels really good right now.Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry.
