Re: Fidel Castro
My father was a civilian computer programmer working at a military base in the communication room (for encrypted messages) when the bay of pigs happened. He was in the room on duty when the message about it came in, and he to 1) stay on base like the entire base was and 2) had to keep his mouth shut when there was the invariable speculation in the cafeteria.

Ron Glass
He's found Serenity.

Could there be any greater conceit, than for someone to believe that the universe has to be simple enough for them to be able to understand it ?

Re: Ron Glass
I had to look up Ron Glass. I figured if he was important enough for you to mention he was important enough for me to learn about.
How 'Firefly' Star Ron Glass Quietly Helped Hundreds of Kids Reach College
quote:
Ron Glass leaves behind a lot more than a body of work that earned him an Emmy nomination (Barney Miller) and sci-fi acclaim (Firefly).
The actor, who died Saturday at 71 of respiratory failure after facing health issues for several years, devoted much of his personal time to The Wooten Center, a Los Angeles nonprofit that provides mentoring and college preparation to students in grades 3-12.

He's found Serenity.
He deserves it.

Re: John Glenn
They say he was the last true American hero.
The average person [was] better educated ... back years ago than most people in the world. And then we put more into basic research and learned the new things first," he said. "That little combination is just as true today. If we lose that edge in research and education, we won't be a leading nation in the world. It's that simple.~~John Glenn

Alan Thicke
quote:
On December 13, 2016, Thicke collapsed while playing hockey with his son Carter at Pickwick Gardens in Burbank, California. The manager of the rink said he was talking and even joked to his son to take a photo as he was being wheeled out on a stretcher.[51] Thicke subsequently died of a heart attack at the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, at the age of 69.
I did not realize this before today, but Alan Thicke was a successful songwriter primarily in the TV industry. But that's what I read on wikipedia.
2016 like many recent years has been the year of the demise of many performers and song writers only a fraction of whom have been mentioned on these pages. According to this site Musicians Who Died in 2016 - W’M we have lost 474 musicians so far.
Unfortunately stats like that will mean we can expect to lose a few more music heroes, with at least one more notable heavyweight in the short amount of time that 2016 has left. The last few weeks have included some heavy weights including Greg Lake, Lenny Cohen, and Leon Russell (no disrespect into to anyone I did not mention specifically).
I really hope a future David Bowie or Maurice White was born somewhere on this planet this year, because otherwise the universe is completely unfair.

Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Thoreau: Civil Disobedience (1846)

I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend. Thomas Jefferson

Watership Down author Richard Adams dies aged 96
The book, which critics have credited with redefining anthropomorphic fiction with its naturalistic depiction of the rabbits’ trials and adventures, won Adams both the Carnegie medal and the Guardian children’s prize.
