Some have "explained" this by saying that Luke is the genealogy of Mary; such a claim acknowledges error, since Luke specifically states that it is the genealogy of Joseph [Luke 3:23], just like Matthew [Matt 1:16]. So, either there is a contradiction (Matthew says that Jacob is the father of Joseph; Luke says Heli is the father of Joseph, and from there back to Solomon not a single name is the same; not even the same number of generations), or one of them is making an incorrect statement about a relevant fact for Jesus' claim to the House of David. Also note that Matthew and Luke give contradictory genealogies for Zerubbabel. Matthew makes him a descendant of Solomon, David’s son. Luke makes him a descendant of Nathan, also a son of David. Since Solomon and Nathan were brothers (I Chronicles 3:1-5) they cannot both be paternal ancestors of Zerubbabel. In fact both genealogies are pointless, since both Matthew and Luke go on to claim that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, not Joseph. And since Mary was of the tribe of Levi, it is therefore impossible for Christ to have been the ‘Son of David’ as was required for the Messiah. Not to mention if the genealogy in Matthew is taken seriously, then Jesus has as an ancestor Jeconiah (Matthew 1:12), of whom the prophet Jeremiah said, "Write this man down as childless, a man who will not prosper in his days, for no man of his descendants will prosper sitting on the throne of David or ruling again in Judah." (Jeremiah 22:30) The genealogy in Luke suffers from the same problem, since it includes Shealtiel and Zerubbabel, both of whom were descendents of Jeconiah
