Yes I know how it came about. Athanasius was answering the heretics of his day. I know he answered those who refused to recognize that Jesus Christ is God, and he may also have dealt with those who had what is called a "modalist" view that pictures God switching from Father to Son and Holy Spirit as different modes of His Being rather than existing as three separate Persons all equally God and Lord.
