You can't have common sense gun control legislation in a nation that has no common sense about guns.

I think they should be ignored more than they are. As I've said before, "dog bites man" isn't news. You might as well report, "Sun rises in east," every day.
If people die in an earthquake, I'm not sure that's newsworthy either. What makes earthquakes, etc. worth reporting is that we may be able to do something to help the survivors.

We need to arm the cashiers at Safeway so they can protect the customers. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

What about country music concerts in Vegas? Do you want to arm the whole crowd so they can blaze away at the hotel where the shots are coming from? An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

That's what I'm saying. If more good guys with guns is your solution, arm all the good guys in the crowd with sniper rifles. "He's in that window! No! He's in that window! No! I mean the one beside the one I shot out!" The problem is: How do you figure out who the good guys are? By giving guns to good guys, you're also giving guns to bad guys who haven't done anything bad yet. And you're also giving guns to guys who couldn't hit the side of a barn - but they could hit the side of a hotel.
It has nothing to do with "this day and age". In this same day and age, most of the countries in the world get by with very few mass shootings. It's about the insane attitude that Americans have toward guns. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

I recently re-read two books by Edwin Tunis that I was fond of when I was a kid: Colonial living and Frontier Living. They portray a gun-obsessed and violence obsessed America going back to the 1600s.
They don't have the same problems because they don't have the same attitude - that guns problems can be solved by more guns.
We have to discuss it soon after the shooting because it's only a few days until the next shooting. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

And a lot more confrontations that didn't even involve armed students. Imagine a frustrated teacher drawing his Colt 1911 and yelling, "I said, SIT DOWN!" Kindergarten teaches us how to get along with our fellow citizens. High school is supposed to teach us how to think and discuss things rationally. Trump wants to emphasize the worst aspect of human nature and teach children to solve their problems by shooting it out. We might just as well close the schools entirely. But as long as the 2nd Amendment is interpreted as applying to everybody, it makes sense to let everybody have military-type weapons - i.e. assault rifles. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

I would agree that very little about the 2nd Amendment makes sense outside the US. I'm just saying that it seems to be consistent - if "militia" means everybody then everybody is entitled to military weapons. I wonder if they draw the line at howitzers? But the 2nd Amendment is interpreted as if everybody is entitled to bear arms, isn't it? ABE: Sorry, replied to the wrong post. Edited by ringo, : No reason given. An honest discussion is more of a peer review than a pep rally. My toughest critics here are the people who agree with me. -- ringo

Reminds me of a newspaper article some years back: A school in Los Angeles, I think, was considering building a wall around its playground to keep stray bullets out. Just goes to show there's a solution to every problem. And our geese will blot out the sun.

Makes it easier to spot the outlaws.
As this thread has made abundantly clear, the "law-abiding citizens" kill a lot of people. And our geese will blot out the sun.

And a lot of criminals don't kill people. The law-abiding-citizens versus criminals argument is bogus. And our geese will blot out the sun.

I don't exactly see eye-to-eye with jar on gun ownership, and that's fine. Diversity of opinion is healthier than everybody marching in lockstep. I also don't see eye-to-eye with many people on dog ownership. I agree with my father who said that dogs don't belong in the city. Irresponsible dog ownership causes a lot of harm. A certain amount of dog control is appropriate but there's room for debate on how much. Maybe every police officer doesn't need a police dog. Maybe some people are responsible enough to have a dog just for fun. And our geese will blot out the sun.
