If Trump is impeached over Russia, Pence is likely to go as well - it seems he was just as involved.
If 2018 upsets the House leadership we could end up with ... president Pelosi? (conservative heads explode)
It would take a majority democrat house to bring terms of impeachment, but we still have senate stonewalling.

Re: Trump retweets islamophobic videos from British Far right group
Here's an article about how these tweets are affecting our relationship with Great Britain: The Memo: Trump's Muslim tweets roil Britain
Both major parties in Britain condemned the tweets. Best quote from the article:
quote:
You keep thinking he can’t get any worse, and he gets worse. I just think people have a total disrespect for him it’s overwhelming, Campbell told The Hill.
Alastair Campbell was former Prime Minister Tony Blair's chief spokesperson.

Re: Trump retweets islamophobic videos from British Far right group
If he was a UK citizen there'd be a real chance of being arrested for inciting racial hatred for those tweets. He's a total arse.
And now he's attacked our Prime Minister, it's like being back in the playground.
He re-tweeted three far right videos promoting ratial hatred from a group called Britain First. They're overjoyed with the publicity he's given them. The man who murdered one of our MPs, Jo Cox, shouted 'Britain First' whilst he killed her. Your president is a disgrace to your country, I'm really sorry you have to put up with this international shaming.
quote:
Brendan Cox told the BBC: "Almost nothing Trump does surprises us any more. I think this did.
"I think the revulsion that is out there is because the president of our nearest ally is sharing far right hatred, giving them a microphone, and I think people are authentically shocked by that."
Brendan Cox husband of Jo Cox the murdered MP.

Trump says:
...don't focus on me, focus on the Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine.
His spokesperson then says:
The threat is real and that's what the president is talking about, the need for national security and military spending and those are very real things, there's nothing fake about that.
So which is it? Are we "doing just fine" or is the "threat real"?
Of course, if the threat is real, why are all the examples of this threat fake?

Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Dealing With the Unexpected
I always knew Donald Trump would be a bad president, but I had no idea how bad. When I started this thread I imagined that every once in a while Donald Trump would do something boneheaded, and then we would have this thread where we could post about it. Or maybe he'd do something outstanding, and then we could discuss that, too.
But I had no idea that Trump would be doing something lamebrained multiple times a day instead of just a few times a month. He has by far overwhelmed my ability to keep up. Each moronic action or order or tweet deserves to be described here and then discussed, but before anyone's had a chance to even mention it in a post we're already on to the next birdbrained move.
I have not had the time to deal with this unexpected wealth of material, but today I will at least mention that the Mueller investigation is moving closer and closer to the Trump inner circle. Former Trump National Security Adviser Michael Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with the Russians. Read more about it here and numerous other places: Michael Flynn Pleads Guilty to Lying to the FBI and Will Cooperate With Russia Inquiry

Focus on anything but ME
This quote from the NY Times:
He is casting the men and women of the Federal Bureau of Investigation as unreliable, if not worse, just as he has previously done with C.I.A. agents, federal judges, scientists, Congressional Budget Office analysts and journalists, among others. The president wants to undercut just about anybody who is an independent source of information.
It’s a classic tactic of autocrats, as people who have spent time in modern Russia, China or Venezuela can tell you. The attacks on institutions that check his power continue, the political scientist Brendan Nyhan wrote this weekend. What would you say if you saw it in another country?
His base will likely support him through the entire investigation, even if he gets impeached.

Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul

Re: Trump retweets islamophobic videos from British Far right group

Not really - this would be religious hatred rather than racial hatred, for starters, and the bar for demonstrating incitement to religious hatred is higher than that for racial hatred. To be an offense you have to be explicitly threatening; and the legislation specifically states that "expressions of antipathy, dislike, ridicule, insult, or abuse" of a religion, it's beliefs or its adherents are not criminal. You have to basically say something like. "Let's go and kill the Muslims".
Note that the leaders of Britain First were not charged with incitement to religious or racial hatred - they were charged with harassment for following Muslims around and shouting at them. Hansen's more recent arrest in Belfast was under the Public Order Act from the 1980s, which makes it an offense to:
quote:
use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour (...in order to...) thereby to stir up hatred or arouse fear

Re: Dealing With the Unexpected
Trump apparently has all but admitted via Twitter he knew Flynn lied to the FBI. Then his lawyer proceeds to fall on his sword stating that he drafted that tweet in a attempt to derail any obstruction of justice.
Problem is the White house has stated that the the Dmans twitter account is the word of the White House.
Now the real question will be how much does Flynn know and how far up the food chain does it go.

Shocked?
I'm feeling the same way from a somewhat greater distance here across the border. I'm not sure if shocked is the right word. In fact in coffee chats with friends I often find myself spluttering speechless at how utterly awful this man is.
Like you, I knew he was going to be a bad actor and very bad for the US and the rest of us. I also am amazed at how much I underestimated how bad he would be.
But unlike most around here in Canada (and by most I mean 80 to 90% of us) I do not want him impeached or otherwise removed.
My feeling is that he (and the Republicans) had already done tremendous damage to the democratic process and the foundations of the democracy down there. Any more "abnormalities" in the process just make that worse.
My hope is that in 2018 the Republicans get trounced and Trump be removed in the 2020 vote by a landslide.

I expect that it will be a squeaker in both elections. The slogan in 2020 will be, "He made America great again."

What, the board software only allows me to vote for your post once? I’m outraged!
It could be that I just like Simon & Garfunkel, but I think it’s that that was the most outstanding parody stuff I’ve seen in a long, long time. Thank you for that.
