Lets take this line of thought over to Stiles old thread.
Message 75 Chance as a real force is a myth. It has no basis in reality and no place in scientific inquiry. For science and philosophy to continue to advance in knowledge, chance must be demythologized once and for all. —RC Sproul "A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes." —Mark Twain " ~"If that's not sufficient for you go soak your head."~Faith Paul was probably SO soaked in prayer nobody else has ever equaled him.~Faith

George Carlin and Carl Sagan...two atheists with similar views. As a believer, I disagree yet respect their ideas.
GDR writes: .....Atheists walk humbly with each other....as humans...yet don't consider God....much as one would not consider a spaghetti monster ambling with them towards the sunset. My only critique of such a philosophy is that it raises humans to a responsible level of being fully responsible for our own survival...which scares me a bit. An intelligent cause for existence does not mean that it has to be considered either a supreme being, nor a deity. He just doesn't have any beliefs other than the idea that we are more likley to be the result of intelligence rather than the chance collection of mindless particles. Between the ages of 18 and 36 I considered myself culturally Christian but as far as my actual beliefs were concerned I was agnostic. It seems you invest a lot of energy into denigrating the idea of religion. Why not just be like Stile and let it go? This whole militant thing seems a waste of energy. Religion for better or worse will be around long after you are gone.

Tangle writes: I thought of you when I read this article:
Agnostics doesn't exist. You either believe in god(s) or you don't. If you don't know whether you believe in god(s) or not, you don't believe in god(s).Neither atheists nor agnostics nor deists nor theists have knowledge of god(s). If anyone had knowledge of god(s) we'd all have knowledge of god(s). If such knowledge existed it would be published in Nature and peer reviewed to death. All we have is knowledge of what we believe. Agnosticism is an invented cop-out to avoid a social and intellectual pronlem.Atheist Philosopher Says Religious People Have Actual Brain Damage I was skeptical of this article due to where it was published, so I researched Peter Boghossian some more.

This is an interesting theory, Kyle. Can you elaborate a bit?

Alex is just pointing out how arrogant people are being so small and claiming to have no need for a Creator. God is like oxygen...you wont even miss Him until you need Him.

Why would they not be atheists? Because they chose at some point in their lives to be believers. They dont expect evidence to explain everything.
Are they hoping God will save them? Yes. Critics may point at the bodies and suggest that evidence proves otherwise, but it is insufficient to prove anything apart from physical death.
It seems to me that in a bad situation people are more likely to realize that there is no external help - i.e. no God. Only if they place too much "faith" in science and evidence. Believers dont simply switch boats in the middle of the stream when the rapids approach. Again, this is why many never fully become believers. They never bought the product to begin with. Add: My claim is that in a situation where one might lose their life, many at that moment will buy the product. The risk makes it worthwhile. We're not talking about believers switching boats. We're talking about unbelievers switching boats. Right. Unbelievers chose based on the evidence. In the locked room, the evidence changes. Death becomes more of a reality. A dying man will grasp at straws. On the other hand, your argument also has support.
