I'm wondering what would happen with these existing guns....would the law of supply and demand make them more expensive? Yes, it would. In fact, we have examples of that now. The banning of sales of assault rifles has made the ones currently in circulation very expensive. Banning guns, if that were even possible, would over time reduce the number of guns around. Arguments that we cannot get rid of all of them are not really reasons to get rid of none of them. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. So making the gun free zone would do nothing but legally hamper police from responding. How would such a zone be enforced? That's right, Phat. Gun free zones target police, so that they cannot bring guns into the zone. Gun free zones, if we let you tell it, are law-free zones which the police cannot enter.
How would such a zone be enforced? By arresting gun toters when they carry into those areas? By self-enforcement by folks who respect the law? Perhaps folks like retired policeman Curtis Reeves would not have shot a man and his wife for throwing popcorn on him if he did not have a gun. Of course, no solution is perfect, but I cannot imagine that having more folks in the movie theatre with guns would have been all that helpful in the Reeves case. Throwing more guns at this problem is not the solution. One of the things I stated before is that the mindset here in America seems to be the ultimate culprit. I agree. Here is an example of that mindset. Page Unavailable - ABC News
quote: That's right. A group that wants Florida as "its own white ethno-state" thinks that the shooter is "a normal Florida white guy".
I don't know how easy it is to change this mindset. But that is at the core of why it is so difficult to get any traction on changes. Something close to impossible. Link added by edit. claims that the majority of places targeted for this kind of attack have been gun-free zones Is this claim even true? There really aren't lots of gun-free zones around. Schools are targetted, yes, but the vast majority of the perps in those incidents have been other school children. I suspect that the particular targets in those cases are the student's classmates. Mass shootings in non-school places almost invariably seem to occur in places with lax gun laws. Absent some evidence to the contrary, I'd have to call BS on this claim. At best the evidence would support having some law enforcement presence in a school. Heck, just a metal detector would be a substantial deterrent. Edited by NoNukes, : No reason given. I think most lefties would agree with this. Obama as president was a great marketing tool for selling guns. I remember that during Obama's presidency, folks were actually stockpiling guns in hidden weapons caches out of fear fo the day that the feds came around to take their weapons. There were stories about folks buying guns, putting them in some kind of heavy oil and then burying them in pits.
Now that Trump is president, gun sales are way down. Apparently, folks feel that that humongous pile of weapons they bought over the last eight years is enough for now. https://www.washingtonpost.com/...y-amid-declining-gun-sales

It's certainly got to be true, whether or not gun free zones are particularly targeted, that the victims would be sitting ducks and might have a chance if there was a concealed carry in the audience. A bit earlier I described a different theatre story involving a retired police officer in a theatre that was not gun free zone. Curtis Reeves shot a man for throwing popcorn on him. I wonder if more guns would have helped there. It is simply not true that more guns will help.
I remember when it was a big topic about the theater shooting, since the theater was in a gun-free zone. I don't doubt that people make the claim and even write articles about that. But I don't believe the claim is true. I am aware that people think it is true. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Trump tweeting his words of wisdom.

he civilian militia is made up of every person 18 and older. That even includes 22 million former military people that are trained. That has not been true for quite a long time. The Constitution defines what the militia is, and as we have discussed here before, federal statute further defines the current militia. The closest thing to a militia that currently exists in most states is the National Guard. A few states have some additional bodies that meet the constitutional requirements. No, the Militia is not you and the Yancy Street irregulars, despite your desire and willingness to take on federal troops with your collection of pea shooters. It is not 1812 anymore. I am totally blown away by the stories about the high school students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. A number of students have spoken quite eloquently about their governments lack action other than lip service on the issue of school shootings.
Apparently, these kids were not impressed by Trump's "Thumbs UP" photo op, and are expecting, and even demanding that real actions are taken. Florida teen shooting survivors announce 'March for Our Lives' demonstration in Washington - ABC News

Bottom line: Republican claims about beefing up the mental health care system is a smokescreen for doing nothing about guns. I would actually tolerate those claims if the sentiment expressed was followed up by actually beefing up the mental health care system. But what credibility do the Republicans have on health care of any kind? The only issue that seems to motivate our Republicans in Congress is ensuring that the mentally ill are not separated from firearms before they kill someone. If "smokescreen" is actually a euphemism for saying meaningless deflecting drivel while doing the will of the gun manufacturing lobby while reserving your own ring in Dante's Inferno, then I totally agree with you. "Smoke" is probably far too mild. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison. Some right winger's do not believe that the high school students are sincere in their reaction to their friends being killed and are pushing a conspiracy theory that the kids are being used by left-wing radicals.
Among those pushing this "theory" is Former Congress Jack Kingston from Georgia who believes that Soros has riled up these kids. In an interview with CNN, Kingston expresses skepticism that 17 and 18-year-old teens are capable of chartering a bus to a scheduled meeting or that their peers in other states are capable of showing solidarity and scheduling protests of their own. Kingston on Twitter: Former congressman joins smear campaign against students who survived Parkland massacre – ThinkProgress
quote: During the CNN interview, Kingston claimed that these kids are being hijacked by Soros, Antifa, and the DNC. He doubts that the kids have "the money for the bus" to take a trip to watch the legislature as they did yesterday. (I remember as a teen playing hooky from school one day and taking a trip to the Georgia capital house. The round trip cost about the same as my lunch money. Yeah, I was a nerd...) Apparently, wing-nut politicians cannot believe in a protest that is not orchestrated at a grassroots level, because that is not the way they would do it. Here are some even more outlandish wingnut theories. Florida lawmaker's aide fired after claiming students are actors | CNN Politics
quote: The aide (Benjamin Kelly) was fired after making these comments, here is his explanation for those preposterous comments.
quote: Harrison and the Florida House speaker have terminated Kelly's employment and have denounced his comments in very strong terms. A little more wingnut conspiracy stuff before I go back to writing some code...

quote: For what it is worth, Hogg is very polished. However, he comes by that polish very honestly. Hogg is news director of the school TV station. He should be applauded for the abilities he has gained and not denigrated for them. Unfortunately, EvC's own wingnuts don't post here very often anymore, so we don't get often get to hear them bashing regular news outlet and reminding us that their "alternative sources" are the only truthful ones. That's right, the same sources that let us know that the Sandy Hook massacre was a false flag operation and that Hilary was running a child sex club out of a DC pizzeria are the only sources we should trust. Well, it looks like after a couple of days of waffling, the president has decided to turn over the problem of school shootings to the gun manufacturer's lobby. The president has decided to back off of the weak steps he was taking earlier during the week, (tightening background checks, curbing sales of bump stocks) and has put his support behind getting weapons into school.
Great. Problem solved. We will have more weapons than ever. I imagine the gun manufacturers are slobbering like one of Pavlov's dogs about the potential for lucrative gun contracts to supply guns to every school in America. As is the case in the real worlds, discussion regarding gun laws always provides us the opportunity to ramp up the rhetoric. Certainly, I am not the voice of reason when it comes to maintaining civility on the internet.
Yesterday I listened to NRA spokes rifle,Wayne LaPierre telli folks that people on the other side of the debate don't care about school shootings are the young people who got shot. According to Wayne, even your local law enforcement folks don't care about school children. Well given that the most prominent speakers right now are the survivors of school shootings, surely those accusations are not accurate. They are examples of the BS that passes for discourse over this issue. In the interest of fairness, I probably would post a left mischaracterization of the right wing's position. While I acknowledge that those things exist, I am not going to point them out. If you've got them, post them. Nevertheless I was pleased that one of our more conservative members did respond. That point of view is missing here. What is still missing is a quality conservative response. Let's not make the mistake of assuming that just because somebody posts weak assed comments in EvC and gets rebutted, that anyone one has won anything substantial. If you're passionate about the issue, and lots of you are, and you are an American, then please get off your posterior and do something. Don't let a bunch of 17-18 year old kids carry the ball by themselves. That would be an ultimate betrayal. And don't count on the DNC to help you. They are scared that you will energize the Republican base. Find out who is on the right side of this issue in your town, and participate. I am guessing that there are plenty of right minded, newly energized folk around you that are just as eager as you are -- even if you live in gun infested central Carolina. Find somebody doing something positive and join them. I know you will get a t-shirt out of it. Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also in prison.
