Author | Topic: Is The World Getting Better Or Worse? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

As usual, subjects like this are simply silly. Some ares are getting better, others worse and it really is location, location, location.
What we can say is that in measurable areas there does seem to be a general trend of improvements. But so far no one has shown any evidence of any general violent brutish thug phase and as long as we do not allow any religion to gain power we should do just fine overall.

Phat writes: jar writes: Trade wars and ideology wars with other cultures. What major conflicts are we in now? So far those would not count as major conflicts in the real world.
Phat writes: jar writes: The populists will want a dictator if necessary. The rest of them will try and patch the hole in the ship....in vain. the bill will get paid and we will die poorer, I suppose. And just what will those aging middle class in the US. baby boomers who are used to having more than they may end up with do? But that does not say anything about reality. There is a wannabe dictator now but what does reality show? What programs has he been able to actually implement?

Percy writes: But will technology enable us to adapt to our transformed world? Pardon my pessimism, but given that year after year we can't even control wildfires in the west, and we'll certainly never be able to control hurricanes and tornados and droughts and floods and rising seas, I doubt it. Another issue relates to basic infrastructure, food and water and power. Right now we have a system based on moving stuff from where it's stored to where it's used, but so much of that depends on the environment remaining stable. Right now we are growing food where there ain't no water and flying food all over the world but flying food requires massive infrastructure and irrigation requires a predictable source of water. We have built our power sources next to water used for cooling but that makes those power sources vulnerable to changes in water levels and water content. Unfortunately we have adopted and continue to adopt a fixed global infrastructure instead of a flexible local infrastructure which will just mean that disruptions in one locale will have repercussions world wide.

Faith writes: Trump isn't a dictator type. Yet he behaves exactly like il Duce; even has the exact same speach patterns and mannerisms. Even the same facial expressions.
Faith writes: And WHAT Republicans support him enough to give him such powers? Fortunately so far he has not had the support of the Rule of Law, the Senate, the House, the Courts, the voting public. In fact other than the support of the Electoral Congress and his dwindling cult following the only support he has is from bigots and fascists.

But can any of those be called major conflicts?

golden writes: Officially we are at war in the seven countries mentioned according to the unclassified portions of the report that the NY Times got ahold of. What I think is even more important is that Congress is the body that declares a State of War exists and TTBOMK Congress has not declared that a State of War exists between the US and any of those seven nations. We have gotten far too loose with using US aggression outside the limits imposed by our Constitution.

Phat writes: Throw us in a depression globally and take away our cushy lives but give us access to the weapons of mass destruction (or the ability to vote into power someone who does) and our similarity to Nazi Germany will not only equal but exceed their barbarity. But what about a depression that is not global but just the US?

Phat writes: The challenge for the US citizen in general, and notably the authoritarian populists specifically is to maintain our composure while the rest of the world moves on ahead of us. Nonsense. The challenge is to stop the madness that is current Conservatism and Neo-Fascism and spend our wealth on improving the general quality of life.

I cannot even believe you asked that question.

So do it Phat. Honestly define what WE have.
And what people need is shelter and health care and clothes and food and protection and comfort and education.
They are the least of us my brothers. They are those who do not have shelter and health care and clothes and food and protection and comfort and education. We are not expected to support anyone Phat but we are charged by Jesus (have you ever heard of Jesus or read what he commanded? ) to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, educate the children, comfort the sorrowful and protect the helpless. Learn the basics Phat. What nation is the largest oil producer? What nation is the largest natural gas producer? What nation is the largest food exporter? We are wealthy beyond belief; so wealthy that we destroy crops to keep the prices stable. That is utter madness.

Phat writes: How do you convince the populists that giving rather than acquiring is the solution? How do you tell a guy in debt with a mortgage that the solution is to help the ones poorer than him? You sit down with the person and try to find the path out of debt. Is it best to refinance the mortgage or maybe sell and move to a less expensive home?
Phat writes: How do you convince the populists that giving rather than acquiring is the solution? Education; throw God away, ignore and deride the Apologists and conmen; teach children to discriminate and to think critically.
Phat writes: Its basically a Liberal vs Conservative thing. I argue that we need to rebuild our own infrastructure rather than simply keep giving away foreign aid. When we are stronger we can help more people. Yet we are not doing shit about our infrastructure and in fact the Conservatives are doing everything they can to make the matters involving infrastructure even worse. We need (and many have tried to explain to you for decades now) that foreign aid is not giving away, it is investing.

Faith writes: Are you complaining about what we spend on the military? Yes. If we can pull funds from the Military Budget for something as utterly brain dead and stupid as the US/Mexico Border Wall then we are allocating far too much to the military and should be spending that money on something that at least has value.
