As someone who was once a high school boy, I can say with some confidence that that is utter bullshit. If you set aside the political and racial dynamics of the encounter, the crowd dynamics are quite clear. Sandmann isn’t trying to defuse the situation. He’s acting like a tough guy and signaling his disdain for Phillips and quite clearly playing to his classmates. He’s feeding off their hoops and hollers and vice versa. It looked like a smirk to me too. I believed the whole media lie at first. An old Indian claiming he felt threatened, hard to ignore. Turns out the whole story was wrong. The kids were doing nothing. The Indian said the kids surrounded him and he was frightened. Fact is he walked into their group right up to the kid that seems to be smirking, and continued drumming inches from the kid's face. Given the actual circumstances that came out later I take the boy's word for it that he meant to be smiling to try to defuse any antagonism. He didn't do anything but stand there and let the Indian drum in his face.

I'll agree that the kids were being typical teenagers...and perhaps unknowingly entitled too...but the Indian was a professional activist as were the black Israeli group. There are no victims here except the gullible public buying the media frenzy. Its a non-story whipped up into a story by an overzealous media.

My viewpoint is gathered from the videos watched. I was not there so do not know the whole story. In my opinion:
The Black Israeli group started the whole mess with some pretty racist taunts.
The Indian was a professional activist yet seemed relatively peaceful. He sought a media spotlight but was relatively harmless.
The Catholic high Schoolers were a bit rowdy, but did nothing any 16 uear olds wouldn't do....they were in front of their peers and a media spotlight and came off pretty good considering. So what if they were "entitled"? That's not their fault. Nor should the minorities be the only victims here...if at all.As I said before, this was a nonevent whipped into an event by an overzealous media. The only victims here are a gullible public...of all persuasions and ideologies.
