I asked him again and got back a reply already. Yes, he had SBCGlobal and couldn't get to it at all after Windows 10 was installed, so switched to Outlook. I won't get to have much of a conversation with him for about a week now though.
Did send him your email.

Windows 10 seems to have installed itself without my permission
HBD asked the following on a debate thread so I decided I'd answer him over here:
HBD writes:
You updated to Windows 10, huh? I remember when you were debating about upgrading and I meant to advise against it, but didn't get the chance. How is it working out so far? I would guess you will probably want to upgrade your memory to the maximum your setup will allow in order to keep it from bogging down really bad.
Unless I accidentally clicked on something, and I'm completely unaware of doing so, I did not choose to upgrade to Windows 10. I got a message about a week ago saying it was about to upgrade, as if I'd asked it to. I tried to shut it down. After being away from the computer for a few hours I came back to find it installed. You could have heard my agony all the way to Michigan if you were paying attention.
But oddly enough it's turning out OK. Things aren't where I was used to finding them but they aren't hard to find. The only thing I haven't been able to find is my set of games, but they are very hard on my eyes so I'm glad to be rid of them. I hope I don't discover where tney are hiding out. Overall the system seems to be faster, which I would not have expected given that my computer is old, low power, and always was slow. Upgrade memory? Can you hear me laughing?
There is a voice-activated feature that I can't use because I don't have the necessary audio arrangement -- and let's put it this way: if I do have it hidden somewhere I don't want to find it.
Although I'm unhappy that this seems to have been done without my choosing, I'm not unhappy with the result. Strange but true.

Re: Windows 10 seems to have installed itself without my permission
A reassuring story since it has similarities to mine, particularly the automatic installation. Here for probably a year I'd been x-ing out every recommendation box that popped up, and they even plastered it over my Netflix film that froze it in its tracks so I kept having to resort to rebooting. So I started watching Netflix on Chrome which didn't have that problem, and then they just up and install the thing anyway. About the same time they installed yours.
Oh well, it seems to be OK with you too. I guess it's a decent enough program. Yes, every forced change in my computer habits has been traumatic, but this one has been somewhat easier.
Freecell, Spider Solitaire, Hearts, Mahjong Titans -- all gone gone gone (totally addicted to Mahjong but it's caused observable deterioration in my eyesight so I'm glad they took it away from me.

Ad won't go away
I don't know if this is a Windows 10 problem or what it is. I made the mistake of reading through one of those long ads you get if you subscribe to a health or nutrition newsletter -- I subscribe to three and usually skip their email ads but fell for this one. Long bunch of pep talks about the terrible health situation that you know is leading up to some product they want to sell you, so I skip a lot of it trying to find where they actually tell you the solution to the problem. This one turned out to be a book they're selling. You say No Thanks and they say Don't Go Away Here's a Super Deal for You, Do You Really Want to Exit This Page, you click Yes and there's another page offering an even more super deal.
Well, the computer hung up on that last page so it's still on my screen after a whole day of trying to get rid of it. I can't use that browser, Microsoft Edge, so I'm writing this on Firefox. I've tried everything I can think of, Alt F4, Ctrl Alt Delete, Restarting, Shutting Down, nothing works. I've got a screenshot of the page in a program called Dropbox but I don't know how to post it, and it probably isn't important anyway.
I suspect there's no solution, but any ideas are welcome.

Re: Ad won't go away
I'd be afraid to try something like that. Not just tiresome but I'd probably do something wrong and be in worse trouble.
I did bring up the Task Manager as NN suggested but of course it's a huge long list of terms I don't understand.
Thanks but I'm probably just stuck with Firefox for now.

Re: Ad won't go away
I was afraid I wouldn't even get the upper panel because the page that is giving me so much trouble takes up the entire screen and there is no upper panel. However this time I got an earlier page and the upper panel was there. But clearing the browsing history, which I've done many times anyway, didn't get rid of it, and the next box that popped up from Edge itself just took me to that final panel anyway. Thanks but this is a headache that isn't going away.

AD WENT AWAY!
I went back and checked and it looked like I did but cleared it again anyway; then I noticed it asked about clearing Bing history so I did that too AND SOMETHING WORKED!! THE PAGE IS GONE. HALLELUJAH!!!
Thank you, jar.

Alas, it came back
But it was my fault, I clicked on another one of those ads. Now I'm thinking Genomicus was right and it is a virus that attaches specifically to those ads. I can get rid of it again, at least I think I did, I'm afraid to look right now, but if it's a virus I need to do something about that.

Lost my big cursor and who knows what else
I HATE COMPUTERS. I HATE MICROSOFT. They make me do a Windows upgrade and it eliminates all kinds of things I need. This time it eliminated the wonderful gigantic cursor my son in law had set up for me when they were here. I struggle to locate the cursor with my bad eyes but the big one I could actually see and follow. It was huge and showed black against white and white against black. I can't do it myself unless maybe he or someone can talk me through the process. But that is SO hard for me and my eyes can't take it. This is so frustrating. I wish I could sue them and make them fix it for me.

PT and dw, thanks to both of you. I will try your recommendations when I'm up to it.
