Percy posted a new message - "Supreme Court Wrong on Second Amendment" at the "Police Shootings" topic. I think that better belongs in this topic. Quoting it all:
Percy writes: In 2008 the Supreme Court disconnected the right to bear arms from service in a militia, ruling that there was a right to own guns for any lawful purpose. One of the arguments for the majority, written by Antonin Scalia, related to the phrase bear arms:
quote: But Scalia was wrong, as explained in detail in Antonin Scalia was wrong about the meaning of ‘bear arms’. In new databases for the period, such uses of the term "are not just rare they’re almost nonexistent." There were, of course, other arguments in the ruling, but the definition of bear arms seems fundamental. If Scalia were correct that it was used primarily outside a military context, then his reasoning to separate "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State" from "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" would make sense. But he had his facts backwards and so his argument does not hold water. The term bear arms was used in military contexts in the 18th century, and the right of the people described in the Second Amendment was specific to militias. Since government militias are non-existent today, there can be no constitutional right of the people to keep and bear arms. --Percy We've also very recently had another Texas school located mass shooting. Not me, but perhaps someone else might want to post something here on that. Moose

See subtitle.
To me, seeing someone (other than police or maybe military) walking around with an open carry handgun would be at least one step up from seeing someone walking around wearing a MAGA cap. Except the first would be a potentially very dangerous dofus, while the second would merely be a standard issue doofus. I would not associate with a potentially very dangerous doofus. The standard issue doofus is bad enough. OSLT. Moose ps - I would approve of open carrying a bong, which would probably get you in more trouble in Texas. Just focusing on one point:
ICANT writes: Fact 6 if I get to the point I become a danger to my wife I will lay my guns down. See subtitle. You are now, more or less, in full denial that you possessing firearms can be a source of danger to someone. What would it take for you to determine that you are no longer rational enough to possess firearms without being a danger to someone? Can a crazy person objectively evaluate that he is a crazy person? I don't think so. Moose Added by edit - My mother was a retired Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who had plenty of experience taking care of the aged. A number of years ago, she was living in an assisted living home and was also a frequent visitor to the neighboring nursing home, which was everything that a good nursing home should be. She saw that the nursing home was a good place, and not a place to be feared. She then had one or more small strokes or something, and got rather fuzzy headed and her ability to take care of herself took a severe dip. She also was becoming a significant nuisance (not a danger) to the other residents of the home. It came down to me to persuade her to make the move to the nursing home. Me: "Mother, you need to move to living in the nursing home." Mother: "Why?" I think: "If you could understand the reason you need to be making the move, you wouldn't be needing to make the move." Now, I was on leave from my job in Nevada, and ended up spending many weeks staying with my mother in her apartment. One day I said: "You know, I'm not leaving until you make the move to the nursing home." Mother immediately replied (and this is the literal truth): OK, I'll go. A day or two later she had her own room in the nursing home. And she loved living there. The paraphrased line to ICANT could be: "If a less than rational person could understand the reason he needed to give up having firearms, he wouldn't be needing to give up his firearms." Really a reply to Jar & ICANT, but also a follow up to Percy's message.
I think that being an open carry person would somewhat be like wearing a jacket with a bullseye on it. If a full-blown wacko is out with his gun, who is going to catch his attention? Who is going to make him feel threatened? Is he going to be deterred by seeing your holstered sidearm? I don't think so. He's thinking "That guy is going to be dead before he can unholster his sidearm." Drawing attention and making yourself appear threatening is not the way to make yourself safer. Moose

Thumbing your nose at the idle liberals is also a human nature thing called Greed. It reminds me of a Bernie Sanders joke. Political columnist Thomas Sowell puts it this way;
quote: Thomas Sowell Quotes (Author of Basic Economics) He's just being a little sarcastic there, he understands. He understands that liberals sometimes pervert words in the English language to give a false impression to uninformed people. It is the word "earned" that is getting perverted. One thing in economics that really ticks me off is the inaccurate use of the term "earn" and "earned". The popular use is what you get paid, regardless of what you did to deserve that payment. I have no problem with anyone getting paid what they truly earned. My objection is those who get paid far more than what they earned, and those who get paid far less than what they earned. To want more payment that what you have earned is greed. Moose
Added by edit: Re: What someone gets vs what they earn in the "Executive Pay - Good Capitalism Bad Capitalism?" topic. Look at both up and down-thread. Probably a good place for "greed" discussion to continue. Edited by Minnemooseus, : Added by edit.
