Re: Are you sane and stable? How do you know?
... gun violence is a people problem, not a hardware problem.
People burning themselves from an open bucket of acid is a people problem not an acid problem until you put that bucket into a second grade classroom.
Second graders are stupid when it comes to buckets of liquids. People are stupid when it comes to possessing guns. Education won't help in either case. You have to remove the bucket.

Yes, of course, gun legislation needs to be more restrictive. IMO all nations should ban all guns for civilian use, including sport.
But there is a bigger problem.
Anti-democracy forces are on the rise in this world, again. Racism, bigotry, discrimination against all manner of "them" expressed in ways from subtle to openly violent are finding receptive supporting populations throughout what we used to consider the strong stable democracies around the world.
Global economic disruptions due to sever climate change will only get worse from here. The rise of the violent right will continue to grow. Our grandchildren will suffer like no other generations before.
The last time the world had to fight off this kind of fascism it cost us more than 80 million dead and, in today's money, $15 trillion. I fear this time the effort won't be so cheap or limited ... or successful.

Hey, DrJones, You're not showing the magazine. The shock inducers are in there. They're called bullets.

Re: Big Guns
Oh, the gun has a shockwave inducer as differentiated from the shock inducer itself. The shockwave inducer sets the shock inducer in motion. It's called a firing pin and every gun has one.
I'm being an ass.
The point is, all this talk of 9mm and muzzle velocity may be interesting but none of that matters. You get hit by a bullet fired from any gun and you're liable to be just as dead.
And it doesn't matter if guns kill people or people kill people, they are just as dead.
The gun problem is one of too easy access to weapons of considerable lethality given over to a hot-headed violent species that needs outside forces to control its violence.
One of those outside forces is limiting the availability of guns. That will not stop violence but the science seems to say it will save lives.
We can limit the death toll by limiting the lethality of the weapons available to this world's most violent animal. In this society the only reason to possess a gun is testosterone-fueled ego. In exchange for lives I can't think of a better excuse to ban guns.

Re: Big Guns
WTF are AZPaul & you talking about?
Humans and guns. Not a good combination. We can alleviate significant suffering in this country by separating the two.
That seems the essence of the main discussion. This lethal power stuff is sideshow, and, frankly, a disturbing one. How much power to instantly kill or take 10 shots to kill is not where the discussion needs to be.
Keep guns away from the proven dangerous species. Humans top that list. Frankly, I wouldn't trust any of the other primates, either. And cats. For god's sake don't arm the cats!

Re: Big Guns
... lets ban the assault weapons like 1994-2004 again.
Yes. Just like hand grenades. Except we ban them because they are stupid dangerous killing machines, not for the size or color of the shrapnel they leave behind.
Yes, it's political, but I think we need to assert the actual argument for such a ban, now, for this action, if we expect to progress to the next step which is to ban all handguns.
Saying the big guns are so dastardly lethal and need to be banned while these little Saturday Night Specials are just ignored as popguns is asinine. All need to be banned for the same justifiable humanitarian reasons. Humans and guns is a terrible unjustifiable lethal mix and needs to end.
I know it won't happen soon, so do what we can to keep grenades and AKs out of classrooms.
But, we do so not because assault rifles have x more killerquatloos of death creating power but because its a gun. It's fuckin dangerous in a classroom. It's fuckin dangerous in a human society.

Don't Expect Much
Thoughts and prayers all around. I’m being callus.
Kids and teachers died but the armed cops outside did nothing for an hour. Gun culture at its finest.
I’m sorry but after the initial tears this whole issue is sickeningly dead to me. Like climate change. We know what we need to do but the politics of stupidity blocks the road at every turn.
With both guns and climate we are not going to do anything except die. We are a sick society and Christianity and their fellow right-wing republican cohorts are the disease.

American Shame
How can Americans still feel even a smidgen of pride ...
It’s hard. And gets harder every day. This is not the society my upbringing promised. We have fallen so far short of what I was expecting, hoping and voting for all my life.
My time in Vietnam showed me how corrupt politics and politicians can be but I never doubted the society. I was confident we upstarts could make the war stop and, god bless America, we did. That confidence in American society can no longer be sustained. We are, not just letting, we are encouraging the fascist right to arise again. And we are sacrificing our rights and our children’s future to the greed and the stupidity of the religious right.
God forbid we suffer again the ravages of Trump but I’m afraid the anti-American Evangelical Republican right, fresh from their long sought victory taking over the Supreme Court, are going to be running this country for quite some time. It will take decades to reverse the voting restrictions the Republicans have put in place. Then we can consider human rights, gun control, climate change, health care and all those other things modern societies should expect from a humane government.
But, right now, we are a fractured broken society and the future is not bright.
