Keeping people up to date on upgrades to the server:
- I won't be upgrading to Centos 7 in the near future for these reasons:
- The webhosting company set up the cloud server, and they chose Centos 6 instead of Centos 7. They haven't been transparent with me about that choice ("I guess the technician just chose Centos 6"), and this makes me wary.
- A couple online webpages that say nothing derogatory about Centos 7 nonetheless do not make me confident with their warnings of the possibilities of a failed install (and dead website).
- I can still upgrade to ALPN by rebuilding nginx, but I don't think EvC Forum takes advantage of any capabilities where ALPN would provide much benefit. ALPN minimizes the number of round-trip communications between client and server, and I think EvC Forum would save only one round trip. There's an initial negotiation between client and server whereby they agree upon a protocol, and since ALPN has the client send a list of supported protocols to the server and lets the server select one it saves a round trip. This would be nice, but performance already seems fine, and much better than the many websites that have somehow bloated themselves with I don't know what, maybe Javascript and Ajax.
- The next thing I will work on is to add an XML site index for webcrawlers. Supposedly this can improve your rank order in searches. Right now EvC Forum has a very low rank for any search terms I tried.
- Google is adding the concept of canonical URL's. I haven't looked into this yet, but it may be something else that helps with search ranking.
