Thank you to marc9000 for defending me against my opponents and particularly the self-righteous brigade, supposedly my fellow Christians who are so eager to condemn a sister in Christ. I confess that I should not have descended to hating my enemy, but it's a sin and God forgives sin. That is a diversion from the point.The point is that you called me a “LYING CREEP” - twice in a two-sentence post - for saying that there was no such group.So far from you “getting angry at all the lies” you get angry and call people liars for saying things you don’t like.

Since I haven’t done that - certainly not knowingly - I don’t think you should do that either.

what kind of "fine people" want to preserve monuments to people that fought to preserve slavery?

Fine people who respect history and some who even respect people who held bad ideas they were willing to fight for. Even Lincoln was respectful toward the Confederacy's defense of slavery even though he opposed it. Those were days of civility toward people you strenuously disagreed with and knew were defending an ultimately indefensible position. Most of the South was for slavery, and Lincoln was fighting to preserve the union, not destroy it. Today of course we have history-challenged tiny little minds who believe they have the right to judge the flawed but great men of a previous generation. A distant relative of mine, by marriage, was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. He was a General in command of a division until he was fired for refusing to put the Hitler Youth in the front line.He may have been a "fine person" in some ways but he was on the wrong side fighting for an evil cause. It would be wrong to characterize him as a "fine person" in general.

Me, I'm getting the impression that some people are talking about slavery as if it were some abstract ideal and forgetting that it means "owning human beings and treating them like property".

there's bad ideas like "Kuwait should be part of Iraq" and then there's bad ideas like The Holocaust, guess which one slavery more closely resembles. You're not going to find statues of Hitler, Rommel of Goering in Germany what's so great about a slave owner?

And I'm sure nobody would call him a "fine person" today. But it is true that the Nazis were in general ordinary good citizens who were carried away by Hitler, as the phrase "banality of evil" captures. I forget who wrote that study of the ordinary men who served Hitler. -- abe: Oh yes, Hannah Arendt. Those who committed murder and other crimes against humanity had to be judged for committing the crimes of course, but I'm considering at the moment how self-righteous all this current eagerness to condemn others is, for acts that even you would commit under the right circumstances. You aren't immune to acts of great evil, no fallen human being is. It is very common for movements to rise up that self-identify as righteous yet commit horrific crimes, yes very colmmon. If you don't see yourself as capable of that you are deceived. A little humility toward history, a little grace toward other sinners, seems to be lacking in so much of today's self-righteous rhetoric. the guy who raped his slaves? what did Lee do that was on the scale of Washington? We're not talking about some country bumpkin from Goatfuck Alabama who was conscripted into the army, Lee was one of the leaders of the fight to preserve slavery, why should he get a statue?

Jefferson is now reduced to "the guy who raped his slaves" by a self-righteous modern with two brain cells rattling around his skull who I would bet doesn't even understand the American Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the US or anything else Jefferson did. Typical. Besides, Jefferson is usually presented as having a relationship with a particular slave he even took with him on trips.Lee was considered to be a great general. Yes i'm sure the relationship between a slave and the person who had absolute control over her life and death was entirely consensual. and he fought for slavery, that outweighs his military prowess.
