If anything, it's easier to pursue happiness when you're healthy. U.S. continued existence simply isn't represented by calls for free health care, free college education, eliminating fossil fuels in 10 years etc. It's not possible for productive people in a society like that to have "liberty and pursuit of happiness".And our geese will blot out the sun.

Allowing only men to vote is archaic. No American who speaks of any part of our Constitution as archaic and anachronistic deserves to be called rational or sane. And our geese will blot out the sun.

You're the one who is ignoring history. The original Constitution denied women the right to vote. The 19th Amendment corrected that. Are you suggesting that the denying women the vote is not archaic? You have absolutely no respect for history. I personally believe that even people as ignorant and hateful as you should be allowed to vote. And our geese will blot out the sun.

One possible argument (which the gun nuts might not be comfortable using) is that criminals are better at gun safety than the average parent. How could this be that those who purposefully place themselves in the line of fire die less often than young children?Hippopotamus.

The flaw in that analogy being that insurance is less likely to kill your children. But then, insurance is more likely to never be used at all... which is why being in the insurance business is profitable. But it sure is nice to have when its needed.Welcome back, Faith.

It's the same as the argument against, "Cars kill more people than guns." ringo writes:
I'm not sure what your argument is, can you expound? The flaw in that analogy being that insurance is less likely to kill your children. A car is useful, maybe necessary; a gun is not. Insurance is useful, maybe necessary; a gun is not. To quote you again: "But then, insurance is more likely to never be used at all... which is why being in the insurance business is profitable. But it sure is nice to have when its needed." A gun is never "needed". More often than not, it is a detriment rather than an asset.Welcome back, Faith.

For the vast majority of people, that is correct, no useful purpose. There are misuses for guns and counter-productive purposes.
So a gun has no use? I imagine the efficacy of an army armed with only flower power.
Let's leave the goalposts in one place, shall we? This thread is about civilian ownership of guns.
I'm thinking it is needed when people are trying to kill you.
Nope. I've survived 66 years without ever needing a gun to prevent anybody from killing me. (And if I had had a gun, what would have prevented myself from killing me?)
What exactly is your plan if you face such a scenario? Read them passages from Gandhi about the philosophy of pacifism and hope they have a sudden change of heart?
Step 1. Live in a society where every bozo on the street doesn't have the hardware to kill me quickly and easily. If he wants to kill me with a nail clipper or a pencil, let him have at it and I'll take my chances. To tell the truth, I don't think I would want to kill somebody just to save myself.Welcome back, Faith.

If you think guns don't kill people, try killing forty people with a spoon.

There's that "law-abiding gun owners" thing again - They'll obey any law but that one. Are you saying that gun owners can only be licensed under force of arms?"I'm Fallen and I can't get up!"

You can't. As I pointed out in another post once upon a time, your country has had this problem for hundreds of years.
So how do we educate, inspire, and discipline this society that wants guns? Phat writes:
And there you go. That's the root of the problem. Some of us resist a government that forces laws on us."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

Actually, it's considerably less than 51%.
Perhaps, but we cant simply have 51% of the people voting in laws that 100% are required to follow. Phat writes:
You seem to be the only one talking about "mandatory reparations". But yes, when you do something wrong, reparations are an important step in doing what's right.
It is my argument against mandatory reparations that jar questions the problem with. Phat writes:
It really doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. If a plurality elects representatives who believe that reparations are the way to go, then reparations you will pay. 49% of us do not believe that white Christians were the problem that reparations and rewriting History are supposed to help solve."I've been to Moose Jaw, now I can die." -- John Wing

Of course. There are all kinds of legal challenges and pressures along to way to a law being enacted. But once the law is enacted, civilized people render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. They don't storm the Capitol.

"Oh my God, what's that sound? Is someone breaking in? This is America, he could have a gun. Why, oh why, didn't I buy a gun. If I get through this, tomorrow I'm going down to Walmart and buying a gun."
In Canada, if somebody tries to break in while I'm home, I'm going to beat him to death with my cane and roll his bloody corpse down the stairs. Tomorrow I might have to buy a new cane. (Full dislusure: It was my dad's cane. He used it only for the last year or so of his life. When he died at 85 in 1997, one of the neighbours suggested I should keep his cane. So far, I've only used if for planning to kill burglars.) (It has a nice retractable ice-spike on the end, so....)"I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!" -- Lucky Ned Pepper
