We got about 8" of snow yesterday. They are calling for another 8"-12" today. Had my tractor battery on a Batterytender all night, so should start right up when I start to snowblow.
Sounds like where Moose lives they got even more snow. For some reason I have a memory that he lives up the shore from Duluth. Could be wrong though.
Then after we get 20"+ of snow, we get an arctic blast. Looks like we might get temps as low as -20F through Tuesday. Wind chill readings could reach -30 to -40F.
It was so bad in Duluth they cancelled the First Lutheran Lutefisk dinner.
Lutefisk dinner cancelled for first time in 19 years
You know things are bad when they cancel a Lutefisk dinner.
Oh yes Lutefisk is as vile as it sounds. I like a lot of "interesting" food, but lutefisk is vile.

Re: acorns
We have Bur Oak on my property. 6 are 40+ feet high. There was very little acorn production this year. Bur Oak are known to have heavy acorn crops only every few years.
So that means the acorn crop was normal.

Official unofficial measurements
Just took 5 measurements around the yard. Averaged about 14". It's still coming down.
Waiting for the snow to slide off the steel roof. Sounds like a freight train coming through the house.

Here is a pic from my deck. I cleaned off the deck yesterday after about 8" fell.
Going to have a lot of work when the snow slides of the new garage with the Steel roof.

I lived in NC for 6 years. Worst 6 years of my life. I love winter and snow.
We have about 350 acres of wooded land in the family right out my back door so looking forward to getting out in the backyard on snowshoes. Probably should wait till next week since it is black powder season. There shouldn't be anyone on our land hunting but not worth the risk. I'd hate to take a 54 caliber slug from a trespasser.

Re: Beautiful
We topped out at about 18". Places north of Duluth, MN reported 42".
Snow removal went fairly well. We did construction last year and I have a large area to clear so figuring out the most efficient way to clear the snow has been a little challenging. Also, a snow blower went down last night.
I have a John Deere lawn tractor with a 42" snow blower. The PTO cable that turns the blower on and off snapped last night. Luckily it happened when I was almost done. I also have an Ariens walk behind blower, that I offered to my neighbor. Glad he didnt have time to come get it yet. Now to see if I can source a cable in Duluth.
Oh it is gorgeous out there. Looking forward to tramping around in the woods. One of my dogs is going to be very jealous, she is 8 with a bad knee so no running through the snow for her. We already repaired one knee, not sure if we are going to pay for another.

Re: Hummingbirds in the snow
Our hummingbirds have been gone for a while. I got bird feeders up late this fall(can't have them up during the summer because of bears), so we havent been getting much action. Hopefully the overwintering birds will find them soon. Was about -10 this morn, up to about 5 right now.

Re: More Snow
-10F this morn. Going to be -20F Sun and Mon nights. It takes a lot of wood to keep a house warm at those temps, but as my last propane fill was $5/gal, I don't mind.
Supposedly this Tuesday will be our last below 0F. At least for this month. Supposed to even be above freezing by the 18th.
I have a feeling it is going to be another wet and muddy spring. At least this year I will have grass and a gravel driveway instead of the clay mud and swamp we had last year. So hopefully a little less of the clay mud.

Re: More Snow
The only birds we get to feeders here(no hummingbirds of course) are black capped chickadee, Goldfinch and Downy woodpeckers. We did have a couple Pileated Woodpeckers in the fall but none over the winter. We used to see a lot more Hairy and Pileated at our last property but that was an area of pines and mature hardwood. Here we are in a swampy area with some Oak and Maple but mostly Ash and Popple(Quaking Aspen).

18" more snow
Got hit again.
Any more snow and I won't have satellite any more.
I have to snowblow trails in back yard so the dogs can get around. Also so they can't get over the fence.
ABE
Sorry about quality. Phone must have frosted up a bit.

Re: 18" more snow
My only concern is what he's going to give us in return.
Nothing good.

The Legislative Fiscal Bureau: Under Walker's Budget, Wisconsin's Structural Deficit Would Grow To $725 Million. A non-partisan analysis of Walker's most recent budget concluded that the Governor's proposed tax cuts would increase the state's budget shortfall over the coming years. Walker's tax plan hyped by Fox would in fact cost the state $180 million and would ultimately turn the touted surplus into a deficit by 2017. [The Legislative Fiscal Bureau, 10/15/13]

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Wisconsin is "37th In The Nation In Private-Sector Job Growth Under Walker." As a candidate in 2010, Walker promised to create 250,000 jobs in his first term. However, entering his fourth year in office, the Journal-Sentinel labeled the state's job growth "anemic" and noted that the Governor is nearly 90,000 jobs short of his 250,000 job promise. New York Times: "Three Years Into Mr. Walker's Term, Wisconsin Lags Behind Minnesota In Job Creation And Economic Growth." In a New York Times op-ed, University of Minnesota professor Lawrence Jacobs pointed out that Minnesota "adopted some of the most progressive policies in the country" as opposed to Walker's austerity measures and found that "Wisconsin lags behind Minnesota in job creation and economic growth":...
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: Wisconsin Ranks 49th In Economic Outlook. According to a June 6, 2013, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel article, projections from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia ranked Wisconsin 49th out of 50 states in economic outlook and the state was one of only five states with a projected economic contraction in the last six months of 2013.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is a very conservative paper. But they occasionally do some actual journalism.
Yeah he's a doozy alright. This continues much longer we might have to consider moving to Minnesota.

Re: About half way through spring...
We have 6" on ground right now just east of Superior, near Poplar, WI. Couple miles further east they are pushing 8". South of Superior I have had reports of up to 10". Big storm for this late in year. Forecast says mid-50's tomorrow and 60 on Saturday. Mud season starts anew.
My wife reminded me that days start getting shorter in 6 weeks.

I saw my first hummingbird of the year the day before this last snowfall. Nothing at the feeders since. Be surprised if early arrivals survived.

More snow in NW Wisconsin
We received another couple inches of snow yesterday. I had to drive in it. It was some of the worst driving I have had to do in a long time. The roads were warms so it turns slushy immediately. It was like driving on grease.
Luckily it was not snowing where my son and I were camping over the weekend. The Scouts had a campout in Chisholm, MN. (hometown to Moonlight Graham and next door to Bob Dylan's home town of Hibbing). It was below freezing when we got our of the tent yesterday morning. I am getting too old for this. This is the problem when you have a child later in life. 20 years ago I would have embraced things like this. Not so much fun at 56. But he enjoyed it so well worth the effort.
