Religion is, ironically, a two-edged sword. Like nuclear power, it has one kinda good side and one really bad side.

Stile, ringo,
We all know the horrors religious thought and organization have perpetrated on this species for the past 100,000+- years. I agree that religion has helped some individuals cope with the harder realities of life. But to go all Godwin on you, IHO giving any credence for good to religion, any religion ever, is like saying the Nazis did good by making the trains run on time. In the long term the good has been so outweighed by the bad as to be non-existent.Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

Reality does that with subjective evaluations.

Subjective evaluation is one of the reasons why religion is unreliable. Unfortunately, some people use the same flaw to criticize religion. Reality does that with subjective evaluations.Hippopotamus.

Guilty as charged. But doesn't change the result.

My whole point is that your result is wrong. There's plenty of good to be found in religion. Maybe it doesn't outweigh the bad but it's far from insignificant. But doesn't change the result.Hippopotamus.

We'll disagree on that. I cannot find enough of anything significant in religion's good side to elevate it above insignificant. Any good seems a mere trifle to the rest of the body of work.

All very nice. Kudos to the givers.
But, as with most things one "Ah, shit!" negates 1000 "Attaboys", and religion has some of the biggest baddest "Ah, Shits" ever perpetrated, so no, I'm fine, thank you.Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

That's the poor mathematics I was talking about. It's a cute bumper sticker but it in many cases it isn't true. It's the same mistake that the fundies make when they say that one tiny sin sends you to hell. It's the same mistake that the Nazis make when they say that one drop of Jewish blood makes you inferior. But, as with most things one "Ah, shit!" negates 1000 "Attaboys"....Hippopotamus.

So for you religion has a stronger good side that counters much its bad side?

You should maybe try reading my posts. So for you religion has a stronger good side that counters much its bad side? In Message 197 you said, "In the long term the good has been so outweighed by the bad as to be non-existent." I'm arguing against "non-existent". As I said in Message 202, "Maybe it doesn't outweigh the bad but it's far from insignificant." In Message 204 I gave you some examples. So, not "non-existent".Hippopotamus.

So that one drop of Jewish blood is not considered as non-existent. Got it.

It would be more graceful to just admit that you were wrong.
