Both are happening, but normally people put their feeders away in the fall until they noticed that hummers were sticking around longer.
My first experience was on December 21, but I don't remember the year, sometime in the '90s. I was working at my computer next to the door to the patio. A movement in the corner of my eye caught my attention. It was a hummer trying to feed at an empty feeder. It was a freezing fog morning with the temp at 21 degrees F. I mixed up some sugar water and have been feeding them year round ever since. What if Eleanor Roosevelt had wings? -- Monty Python One important characteristic of a theory is that is has survived repeated attempts to falsify it. Unseasonable weather here too. Keeps alternating from wet and cold to dry and warm every few days. Last weekend we had dry 80s. dropped to windy 60s today.
We're supposed to get 18 to 24 INCHES OF SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS TODAY. The snow level has already beat records back to the 50s and the reservoirs are full to overflowing. More snow is worrisome because as soon as we have an extended period of warm days it's going to melt and could cause serious flooding in Northern California as well as here in Northern Nevada.

We're also having crap weather for May here on the other side of the ocean. It's meant to snow here in the mountains this weekend. We haven't seen snow in the city since February, I think, but it's unseasonably chilly.

We're supposed to get snow early tomorrow morning. It won't stick but should be pretty while it storms.
Had a couple of rare thunderstorms a couple of weeks ago, scared the crap out of my male Akita. 150 lbs of dog cowering in bed is not a great way to wake up.

I remember the excitement of the very rare snowfall in California. It's never that exciting here.
This is off topic but dogs are funny. Scared to death of lightening, and really it's hard to blame them especially when it's as rare as you said. But I happened to watch the Netflix movies about Ted Bundy the serial killer recently and was interested to find out that dogs would growl and snarl at him as if they knew he was a killer. Only one instance was shown in the Netflix films and it was a little hard to believe, but I got interested enough to read a book about him where two other instances are mentioned: dogs going absolutely bonkers when he shows up and especially when he gets too close to their owner. Nobody took it seriously at the time, just tried to shush up the dogs. But they weren't just barking, they were snarling and threatening and in retrospect it makes me wonder what vibes they were picking up from Bundy. So the moral is Trust your Akita. He may cower when Nature goes crazy but he'd take a bite out of Bundy for you. Edited by Faith, : No reason given. Edited by Faith, : No reason given.

I remember the excitement of the very rare snowfall in California. It's never that exciting here. We get half a dozen storms per year, unfortunately it's not enough for some folks around here to learn how to drive in them. I learned to drive in Idaho so snowy roads don't bother me. Regarding dogs & killers, I remember right after Nicole Brown Simpson was murdered. I couldn't believe OJ would do something like that & leave his kids alone in the condo w/ their mother bloodied & dead outside. Then a local news team showed video of Nicole's Akita's reaction to OJ & that dog was cowed. I instantly recognized that body language & I knew he did it. Edited by ooh-child, : No reason given.

It's a bit funny to see cars with California plates on the side of the road after the first snow storm.

You do realize that we have no idea of where you live (although my admin powers do let me see your IP, which is not a location one would be expecting snow).

Interesting. Trust your doggie. My dog tends to bark only at small children, and women smoking. Not sure what to make of that.

I've mentioned I live in California once or twice in messages to Faith, but I understand that not everyone hangs on my every word.
Tehachapi, my little town, has enough elevation in the middle of California to catch snow storms.

We were in the outskirts of Taos, New Mexico, and woke up to a foot of snow last Wednesday. Up at 8000 feet elevation, but still surprising.

Yeah, small children and women who smoke doesn't quite fit the profile here. But then he probably hasn't encountered a Bundy so who knows.
