Brazil is a soybean giant (Brazil had no soybean industry until 1980).
I forget the exact history, but Reagan (I think it was him) slapped Japan over "unfair trade", and Japan retaliated by looking for another soybean supply-chain.
Brazil developed to fill the Japanese appetite (or the appetite of their pigs?).
Now Brazil is a giant that can fill any void we create by our "trade war(s)"
Buyers tend to be conservative in where they get their supplies. But they can and will occasionally look for a new source, when the old suppliers prove unreliable in one way or another.
(I can't get anything else to load on my computer, but google pages are loading. It seems Nixon was the president who made a "move" that caused Japan to invest in Brazil, but I can't tell you what that "move" was. Wish I could read the actual web sites. I miss the old days of Google making a copy of every page that was hit. The absence of Google "cache" or whatever really sucks, and for a lot of reasons)

Breitbart: Koch brothers are financially supporting pro trade & immigration Dems.
quote:
The pro-mass immigration Koch brothers’ network of billionaire, donor-class organizations is readying to financially back Democrats, so long as they promise to support amnesty for illegal aliens and vote to advance free trade at all costs.
In a memo to its staff, the Koch-funded Americans for Prosperity (AFP) organization announced that the economic libertarian group is set to back any elected official in Washington, DC, ” including Democrats ” who support their agenda of amnesty for illegal aliens and endless free trade, and oppose the GOP voter-preferred economic nationalist agenda of less immigration and tariffs to protect American jobs.
The memo read:
The threat of being primaried prevents policymakers from leading on difficult issues and driving principled policy reforms. AFP or AFP Action will be ready to engage contested U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and state-level primary races, including Republican, Democrat, Independent or otherwise, to support sitting legislators who lead by uniting with others to pass principled policy and get good things done. [Emphasis added]
The Koch effort to financially support pro-amnesty, anti-economic nationalist Democrats would come to fruition through the creation of multiple issue-specific Political Action Committees (PACs), all under the larger Koch network umbrella.
Support for free trade absolutism, amnesty for illegal aliens, and an anti-economic nationalist voting record are basic requirements for Democrats and Republicans who want financial support from the Koch brothers, as outlined in AFP’s memo:
Four new issue specific Political Action Committees (PACs) will be created to make contributions directly to candidates. We know that candidates will seldom agree with Americans for Prosperity on every issue. But for those who do the politically difficult job of leading on a critical issue, these issue specific PACs will make it clear why millions of Americans support them on that issue, even if they have principled disagreements on others. The PACs, which will launch in the coming weeks as new entities working with our broader community, are: Uniting for Economic Opportunity, Uniting for Free Expression, Uniting for Free Trade, and Uniting for Immigration Reform. [Emphasis added]
The initiative is set to put the Koch brothers’ network of donor class organizations in line with Democrats such as Joe Biden ” who has backed amnesty for all illegal aliens and continues to support the NAFTA free trade deal that eliminated nearly five million American jobs ” and Republicans such as Justin Amash who opposes the use of tariffs and has previously suggested support for an amnesty for illegal aliens shielded from deportation by President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
Billionaire Kochs to Financially Back Dems Pushing Amnesty, Free Trade
This was about half of the June 9 article.

The bad news is the country is still populist (but a slight silver lining)
Everything but the foreign policy part, of the March article, made we want to vomit.
Poll: 3-in-4 Voters Favor 'America First' Immigration, Trade, War Platform
65% support a candidate who slaps taxes on Chinese imports (the immigration part was even sadder).
But, the silver lining:
This is June 6
quote:
The latest Harvard/Harris Poll reveals the growing shift of Republican voters and conservatives back to the Republican Party’s origins as the party of economic nationalism and away from the donor class’ preferred free trade absolutism.
Nearly eight-in-ten Republican voters say they support the recent decision by Trump to increase tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports from ten percent to 25 percent. Close to 85 percent of Trump supporters, as well as 76 percent of self-identified “conservative” voters, said they support the hike in tariffs on Chinese imports.
By a majority of 53 percent, American voters told Harvard/Harris pollsters that they support Trump’s increasing tariffs on China to protect U.S. workers and domestic industries from unfair, subsidized foreign competition.
The 25 percent tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports is particularly supported by a wide majority of working class and rural Americans. Nearly six-in-ten Americans with some college education or less said they backed the tariffs on China while about 63 percent of Americans living in rural communities said they supported the tariffs.
It is not just the current tariffs on China that Americans, specifically Republicans, are supportive of ” a majority of 52 percent of all U.S. voters said they support Trump imposing a 25 percent tariff on an additional $300 billion worth of Chinese imports.
Harvard/Harris Poll: GOP Voters Overwhelmingly Back Tariffs on China
Trump is the silver lining.
His support for this old crap makes the nationalistic stuff look way less of a "good thing"
52% support among all voters (instead of the 65% when Trump was not mentioned and associated with back in March)
Trump remains the key (in an ironic way)
