Re: CPB - Gestapo
Congress won't give the money for anything that would help the border situation, for better detention facilities, for more border patrol and other personnel, first of all for the means to prevent such mass immigration in the first place. The workers are stretched to the max and the money isn't there. This isn't the Republicans' doing though of course that's the favorite interpretation these days.

Remember the banking crises? Two of them in the same decade? We can drop $100 billion into the major banks in a few weeks on a hiccup.
Money not there, my ass.
Not the Republican's doing? Whose been in charge these past few years?

Re: CPB - Gestapo
It's the House that has control of funds and if they won't give it where's it going to come from?
I don't know about the banking crisis. If money is available for anything I understand it's the House that appropriates it.
If you know where the money could come from to fund what is needed at the border, when the House refuses to give it, please explain.

I saw this first on "Mysteries of heh Abandoned", which I find fascinating.
Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital
quote:
The Ellis Island Immigrant Hospital (also known as USPHS Hospital #43) was the United States’ first public health hospital, opened in 1902 and operating as a hospital until 1930. The hospital is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. While the monument is managed by the National Park Service as part of the National Parks of New York Harbor office, the south side of Ellis Island has been off-limits to the general public since its closing.
Constructed in phases, the facility encompassed both a general hospital and a separate pavilion style contagious disease hospital. The hospital served as a detention facility for new immigrants who were deemed unfit to enter the United States after their arrival; immigrants would either be released from the hospital to go on to a new life in America or sent back to their home countries. The hospital was one of the largest public health hospitals in United States history and is still viewed today as an extraordinary endeavor in the public health field.[5]
It was HUGE.

Re: CPB - Gestapo
There is a sleazy trick; the Senate takes any bill from the House they don't like, amends it to remove the entire text, and amends it to contain the funding provisions they want. The Constitution says funding bills must originate in the house, but not that the text creating the funding must be in it when it leaves the House.
The House is not refusing money for humanitarian reasons. The Republicans have been insisting on adding what they know is unacceptable baggage. But on Junde 25:
House Approves Border Aid, Seeking to Curb Trump’s Crackdown
quote:
A divided House voted on Tuesday to send $4.5 billion in humanitarian aid to the border to address horrific conditions facing a crush of migrants, attaching significant rules on how the money could be spent in the first action by Democrats to rein in President Trump’s immigration crackdown.
But the package ” which passed by a vote of 230 to 195 nearly along party lines, only after Democratic leaders toughened restrictions on the money to win over liberal skeptics ” faces a tough path to enactment. A similar measure with many fewer strings binding Mr. Trump has drawn bipartisan support in the Senate. And the House bill faces a veto threat from White House advisers, who regard the Senate bill as the surest way to speed the needed aid to strapped agencies dealing with the migrant influx.
Hours before the House bill passed, Mr. Trump said that he did not like some of the restrictions that lawmakers were seeking to place on the humanitarian funding, but that he badly needed the resources.
“There are some provisions, I think, that actually are bad for children,” Mr. Trump said in an interview for a coming book about his immigration policies. “There are a couple of points that I would like to get out of it, but I also have to get the money to be able to take care of children and families.”

Sarah writes:
Does the "before you leave for Phoenix" imply open borders for all except those carrying cholera, trachoma, AIDS, etc.?
Is there any valid reasons for not admitting anyone who wants a better life and the chance to work for it and does not show some immediate reason for exclusions? Are diseases that can be treated a valid reason to exclude someone?

Re: CPB - Gestapo
The political shenanigans between House and Senate on spending bills is cumbersome and complex in a divided government.
For all those years of Republican control nothing was done to address the barbaric way the border patrol deals with immigrants on the southern border. Now that the Democrats run the House the Senate has/will amend any House bill to delete any $$ to address this issue.
This whole thing, the cruelty in the face of already severe deprivation, is purposeful.
Republicans are evil.

One more piece just to emphasize the point.
Oversight of border patrol personnel is so lax ...

Redirect Notice
quote:
Poor conditions including overcrowding, flu outbreaks, and a lack of clean clothes are just par for the course at an El Paso border station, according to a report released Monday by the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of Inspector General. In the report, border patrol argues that these conditions are necessary to stem the flow of migrants to the United States.
The report, first obtained by NBC News, detailed the conditions during a May 7 tour of a border station in the El Paso sector and found that only four showers were available for 756 immigrants. Additionally, over half of the immigrants were being held outside in the Texas heat, while the immigrants inside were being kept in cells at over five times their capacity. One cell meant for a maximum of 35 people held 155 adult males with only one toilet and sink. The cell was so overcrowded that the internal temperatures reached over 80 degrees and the men were unable to lay down to sleep.

The Cruelty Is the Point: President Trump and his supporters find community by rejoicing in the suffering of those they hate and fear.

Humans have lived in the americas for only a blink of an eye compared to elsewhere on the globe. Even the "native americans" came here only a few thousand years ago.
That should be tens of thousands of years ago.

What we (the Iroquois and everyone else) have learned from these waves is that it is important to let in people like Enrico Fermi and not Carlo Ponzi, Carl Schurz and not Johann Breyer, Anthony Quinn and not Carlos Zuniga-Aviles, Antonio de Montesinos and not Francisco Pizarro.
Since you can’t tell what they are like from their ethnic background - and because immigration is only part of the issue this doesn’t seem very relevant.
Again, the issue is controlling the population of disfavoured ethnic groups - including those who are citizens. I don’t believe that is defensible.

I'm certainly in favor of bringing in immigrants. On principle, in fact: I haven't got a pool to clean or a lawn to cut like the plutocrats who want open borders to break unions and impoverish the working classes.
No, I think we need people to come here and it's a kind thing to do to work with people who do come here.
But unregulated immigration? Unless Chihuahua, Sonora, Coahuila, Baja, Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon agree to be the 51st through 56th stars in the US flag people are going to have to line up and follow the rules instead of scaling the fence. Anything else is an insult to the good people who do things legally.
