But the US is much safer today ...
... after ICE swooped in a took over 700 workers off their jobs. It seems that over 300 of the 700 have had to be released already though.

Re: But the US is much safer today ...
Well, how humane. Usually ICE picks up the kids, loses them in far off concentration camps then lets them die for lack of care.
Is this a real change in heart or just a temporary aberration?

Re: But the US is much safer today ...
Wait, what?
I thought that that the reason people were put into concentration camps and locked in standing-room-only cages is because illegal entry into the US is a crime and law enforcement agencies have absolutely no choice but to detain them.
Did the law change?

Re: Who is calling for open borders?
Hyroglyphx writes:
he also says, "No one will ever be deportedexcept, presumably, for serious felons, though Warren doesn’t even say that explicitly." It's true that Drum's summary of Warren's plan doesn't mention deportation, but why do I have a feeling that Warren does have something to say about deportation?
Then why do multiple left-leaning outlets report the same thing?
Source
I don't think you read the source you cited (actual title: Elizabeth Warren’s immigration proposal goes much further than a pathway to citizenship). About Warren's immigration plan it says:
quote:
Migrants who enter the US without papers would still be committing a crime, and they could still be deported.
But Warren's plan, like that of all the other Democratic candidates, is much more humane than Trump's. It's major actions are:
  • Make illegal entry a civil offense, thereby ending family separation.
  • Provide legal representation for immigrants in court.
  • Restore and expand DACA.
  • Greatly increase the cap limit on refugees.
  • Ease restrictions on those seeking asylum.
No Democratic candidate wants open borders. No one debating here wants open borders. We need secure but welcoming borders with laws that make immigration straightforward and unfettered. Maybe someday North America will even achieve something like the EU's country borders, though that day doesn't seem imminent.
Trump's crisis on the border is a fiction. We are not being overrun by robbers and rapists and drug dealers. Trump is exaggerating such threats to justify the inhumane treatment of people who are just like you and me, and who have committed no crime, but are merely fleeing danger and/or economic hardship in their own country. They are merely seeking a better life, like millions of immigrants to America before them.

Back to "Give Joe Biden some credit." UPDATE!
Thursday night he said this:
quote:
We could afford to take in a heartbeat another two million people
quote:
The idea that a country of 330 million people cannot absorb people who are in desperate need and who are justifiably fleeing oppression, it is absolutely bizarre. Absolutely bizarre. I would also move to increase the total number of immigrants able to come to the United States
(Expect the EvC choir, led by Theodoric, to start to claim I said Biden was for OPEN BORDERS, like happened last time I mentioned Biden)
EDIT: I might support Biden now.

New Republic attacks Democratic opposition to open borders. Aug 9 article
quote:
Open Borders Made America Great
For most of U.S. history, all immigrants were undocumented. It's a fact Democrats should embrace.
By AARON FREEDMAN
August 9, 2019
For nearly three decades, American immigration policies have reenforced the false notion that undocumented immigrants are dangerous criminals. From Bill Clinton’s militarization of the southern border in 1993 to the creation of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the September 11, 2001 attacksand now to Donald Trump’s detention of asylum seekers in concentration campsWashington has normalized the view that undocumented immigrants are a threat to America. A threat to be policed, detained, and deported. Though time and again proven untrue, this rhetoricechoed in society as a wholehas only become more pervasive in recent years. Most horrifically, it was on display in the manifesto allegedly posted by the gunman who murdered 22 people at an El Paso Walmart last weekend.
In recent years, Democrats have tried to respond to the tightening noose around undocumented immigrants’ necks with tepid measures, but even thosesuch as a 2013 bill to offer a pathway to citizenship while increasing border militarizationhave failed to shift perceptions. The latest proposal in vogue among Democrats, to try undocumented immigrants in the civil legal system, does nothing to stem the mass deportations that have surged over three administrations in the last two decades.
The only way to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of undocumented immigrants is to fundamentally change the narrative that views them as criminals and so, views them as a threat.
To this end, Democrats and immigration advocates should remind skeptical white voters that undocumented immigrants have long made America great. In fact, many of their own ancestors were undocumented immigrants, beneficiaries of an era of open borders.
The New Republic
This article shows us that despite the founders debate over immigration, there was never an effort to expel immigrants for roughly the first 100 years.
The long article shows us that "open borders" came to an end for non-whites only in 1875, but continued for whites for decades longer.

Can a Democrat defeat President Donald Trump in 2020?
We often hear about constituencies that could swing the race in any direction, such as conflicted Trump supporters, black voters in South Carolina and white Rust Belt voters, just to name a few. However, no Democratic candidate is focusing enough on the potential effect of first- and second-generation immigrant voters, or "new Americans," on the upcoming election.
Here's the reality: New Americansprimarily progressive Asian and Latinx voterscould be the difference between Democrats winning or losing in 2020.
According to the U.S. Immigration Policy Center at the University of California, San Diego, there are at least 21,283,864 naturalized citizens of voting age nationwide. About 2 million Americans have become naturalized citizens since the 2016 election. And the impact of these voters only increases when you add in their American-born families, a younger population that is growing every year. The only reason the immigrant family vote isn't a part of every analysis is that political pundits in America are a vastly maler and paler group, on average, than the public.
If Democrats Want the Immigrant Vote, It'll Take More Than Photo Ops at the Border | Opinion
"a vastly maler and paler group"
Sounds like EvC.
Always keep the bias in mind.

Re: Back to "Give Joe Biden some credit." UPDATE!
All I do is throw facts back at you. If you would read objectively you will see I never claimed you thought LaRouche should have been the Democratic nominee. I stated that it seemed you did. I think that was a reasonable inference from the arguments you were making. I guess my inference was wrong, but I think my reasoning was valid.
It seems I am very good at getting under tour skin. Maybe it will make you improve your arguments.
Oh yeah, personal attacks don't strengthen your arguments, they weaken them..
Edited by Theodoric, : No reason given.

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts
"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.
If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up why would you have to lie?

Bernie doesn't like facial recognition policing
If ever there was a tech that could be exploited I feel this is one that will be debated and anguished over for the next few years. I ask myself.."Self why do you feel that facial recog tech is bad?" I mean if your not doing anything illegal or nefarious why should one care? Then I remember that book 1984.
I am with Bernie on this one, face tech is gonna go from a useful tool to a police state if we are not careful imo.

Bernie Hospitalized
quote:
Bernie Sanders undergoes medical procedure for artery blockage, canceling upcoming campaign events
Sen. Bernie Sanders experienced chest discomfort on Tuesday night and will suspend campaigning until further notice after doctors treated a blockage in an artery, senior adviser Jeff Weaver said in a statement Wednesday morning.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has been praised by former Vice President Joe Biden as being honest with the American people that their taxes would go up if the country moves to Medicare for All, weighed in by citing the costs the country would bear if the nation does not move to Medicare for All.
Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted, Weaver said. Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.
Sanders, who is 78 years old, felt the discomfort during a campaign event. Despite his age, he has been one of the most active campaigners in the 2020 Democratic primary field.
That'll put a damper on his campaign, although it is not that serious and there have been presidents with more medical issues, it raises a question again, of age.
Ageism?

Biden is under similar scrutiny for his age as well, despite being in good health.
I still recall the debate among pundits back in the 80s regarding Reagan's age while he was in office. Yet ironically, he was only 70 at his inauguration.
Bernie is already 78 and Biden is turning 77 next month. Which means if either of them won the presidency, they would be 79 and 78 respectively at inauguration. Sanders would actually be turning 80 in the first term of his presidency.
Mind you, The Trumpster would be 74 if he gets his second term.
Generally, I try not to focus on age. But even I have to admit, I can't discount thinking about it in this circumstance. I think what would help assuage people's concerns is a good running mate that is probably more youthful.

October Debates ... the dozen qualifiers
quote:
A Supersize Debate: Here Are The 12 Democrats Who Made The October Cutoff
A dozen candidates have qualified for the fourth Democratic presidential debate. They will appear together on one night, making the October faceoff the most crowded yet.
The 12 White House hopefuls who met the polling and fundraising requirements set by the Democratic National Committee are former Vice President Joe Biden; New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker; South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julin Castro; Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard; California Sen. Kamala Harris; Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar; former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke; Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders; billionaire businessman and activist Tom Steyer; Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren; and entrepreneur Andrew Yang.
Steyer and Gabbard did not qualify in time to make the September debate stage but have since met the requirements to appear on Oct. 15 near Columbus, Ohio, with the 10 candidates from the last debate.
The DNC requirements were the same last month as they are now candidates had to register at least 2% in four early state or national polls and acquire 130,000 unique donors. Though Steyer and Gabbard hit those marks over the last month, seven Democrats still in the race failed to qualify.
Happy to see Tulsi still in the mix. We need a strong anti-war voice.
What I see here is a very strong field of candidates, not only for president but also there for vicepresident.
Bernie has once again outperformed the others on raising grass roots funding, with over $25 million in the last quarter, but we now have the issue of age related health and potential heart attacks. It should be noted however that many people have been through the process Bernie has just had and have lived long and prosperous lives. Even some 'evil' ones (Cheney), and it certainly makes a strong argument for #Medicare4All universal health coverage.
Enjoy
