Huh. The Democrats have had a majority in the House for six months.
For two years, the Republicans have had majorities in both houses of Congress, and the Republican president has been pursuing policies with the stated goals of increasing detentions. You'd've thought the Republicans would have been prepared and would've already had the money appropriated and on the way of expanding proper facilities. Either nationalists were wrong in thinking that draconian policies would dramatically reduce illegal entry and the left was right (once again), or this infliction of pain was a deliberate policy goal, showing once again the nationalists are unfit to govern a nation that at least claims to be civilized. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn’t know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

This headline from The Guardian pretty much says it all:

From yesterday's New York Times:
How White Nationalists See What They Want to See in DNA Tests White nationalists, as you can imagine, are interested in the results of their own DNA tests. As we all know, those results often result in surprises. Some researchers were curious: if a white nationalist's DNA test indicates non-white ancestry, would they still be willing to post those results on white nationalist message boards? If so, what are the responses of the other white nationalists? Surprising, many white nationists do post problematic results, and also surprisingly (at least to me), other white supremists are usually supportive, explaining away the results as the inaccuracies inherent in DNA testing or by anti-white conspiracies. Conclusions the researchers drew:
“Science cannot save us,” Dr. Panofsky said, noting that in the years since he first began working on this study, genetic tests have increasingly been used to encourage the “mainstreamification” of white nationalism. “The political problem of white nationalism needs to be confronted on the level of values and law enforcement,” he said. Hi, Hyro. Sorry for the pile on, but I just gotta do it.
And this hack, by the way, was also how we now know there was a conspiracy to oust Bernie Sanders by the DNC in favor of Clinton. What conspiracy was this? As far as I know, all the leaked emails showed was that people in the DNC didn't like Sanders much and trashed-talked him. That seems to me to be a gross breech of professional ethics and shows a potential for bias, but as far as I know the emails don't show that they actually took any action based on this bias. Am I wrong? It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn’t know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

From the New York Times:
Electoral Time Bomb, Republican Strategists Fear The climate crisis is becoming an important issue among young Republicans. A majority of younger Republicans see climate change as real and important (although it appears that only a minority recognizes the human cause). Republican strategists are recognizing that there will be some loss of votes in 2020 and perhaps a much more substantial hit beyond. Bad news is that by the time their votes matter in the policymaking, it will probably be too late to do anything if we haven't already committed ourselves to a solution. But it does appear that the current Republican party is committing itself to policies that will eventually doom it to minority status - not that it would matter if it happens on a dying planet. But it is stuff like this that must worry Republican strategists, which is undoubtably why part of their strategy is to maintain artificial majorities through voter suppression and extreme gerrymandering. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman |

Once you’re familiar with the pattern, you’re able to identify them. Is the pattern "a shooting occurred"?It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

It certainly doesn't help, either, that Trump's purges of competent people in favor of hacks, apparatchiks, sycophants, and delusional imbeciles doesn't leave him with many people who know even the first thing about diplomacy.

I figured trade agreements would come into this.
Both, because that's his main focus, and also because having already gone the route of tariffs and barriers he's already shot the main arrow in the quiver leaving very little else for leverage. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

I guess this means Planned Parenthood isn't in it just for the money after all.

[Soros] is a fat cat capitalist. The right should love him. The problem is that the majority of the people want clean air and water and so want large corporations to be regulated. They also want a reasonable social welfare safety net and public schools and access to healthcare, and they'd like at least a minimum of labor rights. The majority also want rich people to pay taxes to pay for this. As a result, the 1% hate democracy. They don't want to pay taxes, and they don't want their businesses fettered by regulations or uppity unions, but these are things they've had suffer under democratic government. But Soros is one of the few billionaires who believes that the majority is right, and who has a commitment to democratic principles, and who is willing to spend his wealth to promote these things. Hence, Soros is the enemy of the goals of the 1%. Since the 1950s, the 1% has gotten really good at using working and middle class white people's grievances to manipulate them into jumping through their hoops. Hence, the hatred of the right for Soros even though most of what Soros stands for would be supported by rank and file red staters if they had any idea of what they were talking about. It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

Not sure exactly what that last one means. Children born abroad to parents who are US citizens do not automatically qualify for US citizenship. The parents have to have residency in the us for a certain length of time and for a certain period before the child's birth. This link from the State Dept. has the details. I'm guessing that's what is being referred to.It says something about the qualities of our current president that the best argument anyone has made in his defense is that he didn't know what he was talking about. -- Paul Krugman

I assume they're stateless if they're born in a country that doesn't have birthright citizenship. According to the Wikipedia page on jus soli:
Jus soli in many cases helps prevent statelessness. Countries that have acceded to the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness are obligated to grant nationality to persons born in their territory who would otherwise become stateless persons. Seventy-three nations have acceded to the Convention mentioned. As for the children born in other countries, I presume that they are, indeed, born stateless. I don't know what remedies exist for these persons.
Added by edit: Oops, I just read the article on The Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
"Stateless birth" on their territory attracts the grant of their nationality (article 1). Otherwise stateless persons may take the nationality of the place of their birth or of the place where they were found (in the case of a foundling), otherwise they may take the nationality of one of their parents (in each case possibly subject to a qualifying period of residence in that State) (article 2). I still have no answer for the case where none of the relevant countries have acceded to the Convention. By the way, the US doesn't appear to have acceded: list.
