Re: Trump and the Trust Issue
The likelihood that Trump flat out lied that there were two calls from high-ranking Chinese officials Sunday night continues to grow. The CNBC article China unaware of any calls to Trump reports these comments from Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang on Tuesday, a day after he first denied the calls ever took place:
quote:
I have not heard of this situation regarding the two calls that the U.S. mentioned in the weekend.
...
Regretfully, the U.S. has further increased the tax rate on China’s exports to the U.S. This extreme pressure is purely harmful to both sides and not constructive at all.
...
We hope that the U.S. can maintain calm, return to rationality, stop wrong practices, and create conditions for the two sides to conduct consultations on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
State-run media Xinhua reiterated the Chinese position on trade:
quote:
China did not and will not surrender. Playing the old tricks of bullying and maximum pressure, the U.S. administration has escalated the trade tensions repeatedly and tried to coerce China into accepting its irrational demands.
Xinhua called Trump's demands that US companies leave China "ridiculous at best."
Trump supporters: Does this sound like a country that's ready to talk? Do you still believe Trump's declaration that trade wars are easy to win?

Re: Trump and the Trust Issue
Do you still believe Trump's declaration that trade wars are easy to win?
Yes.
Trade wars are easy to win if you don’t mind destroying your own economy along with that of your opponent, which along with Europe’s issues with Britain and the issues in the Middle East and Latin America, leaves the island nation of Tuvalu as the premier economic powerhouse of the planet.
Simple.

Eschew obfuscation. Habituate elucidation.

Re: Trump and the Trust Issue
What happens if China simply says "Okay, you win. Please cash in my chips (all those government bonds we purchased) and we will padlock all the properties we own in the US and pull out all of our business interests and instead turn to Iran and Pakistan and Turkey and Russia and Brazil and Mexico and Canada and the EU and Indonesia and Africa and Argentina and Latin America as trade partners. No hard feelings and congratulations!"

Re: Trump and the Trust Issue
Then the island nation of Tuvalu becomes the premier economic powerhouse of the planet and the rest of us have another war but his time with nukes.
Actually it wouldn't be a bad idea for the Chinese to sell off their US Bonds. That would so depress the price of the bonds everyone else we owe trillions to would panic and also move to sell off their bonds further depressing the price then we could buy it all back for pennies on the dollar.
Of course the ensuing collapse of the world economy would precipitate yet another world war over vanishing economic resources but that's OK since our climate problems are going to dump that into our laps sooner than we expect anyway.
We're kinda fucked either way so might as well have a seat, get comfortable, bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

You get a pardon! Everybody gets a pardon!
‘Impeachable bribery’: Legal experts horrified by Trump’s promise to pardon aides for breaking the law to build his wall
quote:
Overnight The Washington Post published a bombshell report: President Donald Trump, in an effort to ensure his re-election, has been directing aides to break the law to get his border wall built. Trump has ordered White House aides to fast-track billions of dollars’ worth of construction contracts, and aggressively seize private land and disregard environmental rules, according to the Post, so he can fulfill a campaign promise.
To make matters worse Trump also has told worried subordinates that he will pardon them of any potential wrongdoing should they have to break laws to get the barriers built quickly.
Legal experts are weighing in n the news and they agree: Trump’s actions are illegal and impeachable.
.
The White House, in an effort to minimize the damage, has said the President was only joking when he told aides to break the law so he could cinch re-election.

That explains a lot
#RussianCosigners trends on Twitter after bombshell report says Trump’s loans were guaranteed by Putin’s pals
quote:
MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell reported a bombshell news story Tuesday night: President Donald Trump’s Deutsche Bank loans were guaranteed by Russian oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin.
O’Donnell, who cites a source close to Deutsche Bank, also says the German financial services company has copies of Trump’s tax returns that show he pays little in income taxes, and that Trump would not have been able to obtain those loans without co-signers.
If true, that would explain every kind word Donald Trump has ever said about Russia and Vladimir Putin, O’Donnell added, as Raw Story reported. If true, that would be a significant factor in Vladimir Putin’s publicly stated preference for presidential candidate Donald Trump over presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Re: That explains a lot
I think I may have mentioned "Follow the Money" before. The importance of that continues to grow since financial issues will persist beyond the Presidency and cannot be pardoned.

Trump Press Secretary lies! Film at 11
Trump’s top spokeswoman caught in a ‘bald faced lie’ after trying to justify Playboy reporter’s suspension
quote:
According to documents filed by attorneys for the Justice Department this Wednesday, a supposed written statement by a Secret Service agent used to justify the suspension of a reporter’s White House press pass does not exist, Law & Crime reports.
The alleged written statement was attributed to a Secret Service agent who intervened during a Rose Garden spat between Playboy reporter Brian Karem and former Trump advisor Sebastian Gorka. During a government hearing this Tuesday to determine the constitutionality of Karem’s suspension, a U.S. District Judge ordered the White House to provide the statement, which White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham initially cited as evidence.
Responding to the court this Wednesday, DOJ attorneys said there is no written statement by the Secret Service agent who intervened and spoke to Mr. Karem during the July 11, 2019 incident.

the vice president is a YEC, what a great time to be alive.
we went from having a president openly hostile to Christ with a VP who takes the eucharist yet is publicly pro-choice (ultimate hypocrite), to having a president who courts the religious right and a VP who is a born again YEC.
God is good.

What President was openly hostile to Christianity?

Facts don't lie or have an agenda. Facts are just facts
"God did it" is not an argument. It is an excuse for intellectual laziness.
If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up why would you have to lie?

What's to hate? The "true Christians" are all adulating The Beast and wearing the Mark of the Beast upon their foreheads (MAGA hats).

Re: Representation of immigrants
Old topic, but I only just stumbled across it.
Citizens of a country are allowed to vote in their country's elections even when they live abroad. That seems so obvious to me I can't imagine what the objections are.
It's also not true, or at least, not universally so. My right to vote expires in 2021 as I will have been a non-resident too long (though of course I'd be able to vote if I ever moved back to the country of my birth). This seems like so obviously sensible to me that I'm astonished how many countries allow their citizens to vote decades after they emigrated.
What does this have to do with the issue of the constitutional requirement that the US census must count all persons?
I think censuses are a fools errand, but that's another topic. However, I think it's definitely a bad idea to base congressional apportionment on census population. I know it's constitutionally required, but it's a bad idea.
In today's age international mobility is very high, and this means that the number of non-citizen residents in certain places is high. I am not a citizen of country of residence. Non-citizens are generally concentrated in certain areas; usually for economic reasons.
An extreme example should demonstrate why this causes a problem. Region A's population are all citizens. Region B's population are 50% citizens, 50% non-citizens. Both regions get to elect the same number of representatives, even though there are twice as many voters in A. The vote of a resident in B is weighted more favourably than A. Real examples are of course less exagerrated, but votes in areas with a high proportion of residents who can't vote do indeed count for more.
It's not only foreign residents that demonstrate this flaw in the US system of apportioning representation - prison populations have the same effect of weighting the votes of non-inmates in the same area.
It's not like this is some golden rule that all democracies must abide by. In the UK, redistricting is done to try and equalise the number of electors in a constituency - not the census count of residents. So non-citizens do not count for districting, and nor do children. Here in Czech Republic the regional distribution of seats in the lower house is not even known in advance of the election. The number of seats granted to a region is decided based on the number of votes cast.
