The way Ellis Island did it was as a Welcome Center. Folk were provided with a health checkup and if they were found to have a contagious disease provided with hospital care. Others were asked a few questions and then simply admitted.Ellis Island is a good example of what we should do today; welcome folk, make sure they are health including providing necessary medical treatments and then let them join the general population.We are supposedly a nation that functions under the rule of law. If you actually read what is written in our governing documents you will find that certain basic rights apply to anyone within the Jurisdiction of the US. One absolutely basic right is that a person is considered innocent unless first charged with a crime and then adjudged to be guilty by a court and with legal council.This is different than in other nations and one of the somewhat unique characteristics of the historic United State of America. In the US someone must be judged guilty and no one is presumed guilty. A person does not have to prove they are innocent; that is the default position. It does not matter if the person is a citizen or non-citizen; the same rules apply. The person is presumed innocent.The idea of a wall is simply brain dead stupid.

Yes I know about that law and it's crazy. Most people at Ellis Island had legitimate authority to be there of one sort or another, but at our southern border we are talking about gate crashers mostly. Even those seeking asylum don't do it right, they wait until they get here to make that claim. Maybe we need a zone where they are processed that isn't within the jurisdiction of the country. We can't take in six billion people you know. Or maybe you don't know it. Recently our church put on a community fund raiser to raise money for the local fund bank, the local hospital and a local institution helping seniors. Well it was being set up 2 teenagers that are part of the Islamic refugee family our church, along with other Christian churches had sponsored, helped to set it up.While they were there they started talking to a woman setting up a booth who expressed sorrow for what they had gone through and what had, and what is happening, to their country. (Syria) Then they found out that she was from Israel and that she was Jewish. These Islamic kids were completely shocked as they had believed that they were hated by Jewish people. It was a real revelation to them.The kids went home and told their father about all of this. Their father then contacted our church group to find out the phone number of this woman so that he could invite her over for dinner.All this happened at an event sponsored by a Christian church. Jesus' way is about building bridges - not walls.

Because that is how our laws and Constitution are written and our historical legal system has mostly worked. Granted bigotry and denial of the rule of law has also been a common feature of the United States.

I think that a lot of us born in western democracies such as Canada or the Excited States found ourselves born at third base and then think we got there by hitting a triple.

Want to put in a plug for Michelle Malkin's new book that just came out last week, Open Borders Inc., Who is Funding America's Destruction. All I know about it I heard on a weekend conservative talk show, so I have no evidence for anything she claims in it. I haven't read it and may not read it. I post it in case anyone wants to hear about how there are anti-American forces funding the destruction of America by interfering with all attempts to control who comes across our borders. Soros is one name, some churches are also named. Even though the critics will call the book one-sided and biased, it is well worth listening to how the other side thinks and why. It seems to me that globalists care not one whit about preserving national heritage---even if we were a self-serving empire at worst, we still have the right to our sovereignty. I am a moderate politically, so I don't hate "the Left" as much as you do...I see it as all people sinning, be they conservative or liberal, but I would side with the populists in the event of any attempts at dismantling the United States. Uncle Sam needs to take care of me first...not the starving global masses. Granted, God wants us all to take care of each other, which is an ironic call for one world people....and im not sure what He expects us to do. My jury is still out. One thing is for certain, however. There are some powerful global changes that even secular humanists see as inevitable. I'm not so sure that I am comfortable with most of them.

I know. I've read the books on White Privilege and I realize that I feel entitled. I don't really see how I'm ever going to change unless I really wanted to change, and that means humbling myself and eating a lot of crow. I'm getting older, for one thing, and I believe that I should be taken care of...its my parents sweat justified. As for me taking care of others, I know that it is what God likely wants me to grow towards....but I admittedly am nearly broke and getting more helpless each year I age. I keep arguing with God not to make me homeless, crippled, or poor...and He keeps telling me that it is up to me! I can't figure out why the poor widow was immortalized in scripture...she gave all that she had...which was but little. It never says whether or not she found the comfort which she surely deserved.My friend, Michael, (whom I mentioned in another post) is poor and nearly homeless, yet he accepts his spot in life and fights to be a better father, teacher, and community adult leader. I know my scripture. God gives grace to the humble yet resists the proud. Sometimes, the reality is unforgiving, however.I'm just 60 years old, diabetic, and tired. I'd just say that it's all too easy to confuse sinning humanity with an evil ideology. We need to hate the evil ideology with all the strength we can muster, and all the understanding we can acquire about it. We can have compassion for sinning humanity but not for an evil ideology that has them in its grip and will destroy everything people need to live. Pray for them, pray that God will tear down the ideology.

Do you mean the evil ideology that says that as a society we have a duty to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, protect the weak, comfort the sorrowful?

"Excited States," that's cute.We no doubt need a lot more humility and gratitude for the great blessing of having been born into such privileged nations, but we certainly don't need the guilt so many want to lay on us. We need to work to preserve the blessing or it will be taken from us and nobody will benefit from it.
